iron bushing removal rear leaf spring

I got the leaf spring off easy enough. There are two iron bushings on the lower part of the shackle that I just cannot get out. I am replacing the pins and they will be greased through the fitting. The old pins look pretty good. Could I just leave the old bushes? Or how can I get them out?

Several options for removing old bushing.

1)Cut the bushing with a hacksaw blade of you can get enough travel – it’s by hand and takes time.

2)Use a drift pin if you can get a good alignment

3)Use a set up where there is a washer on the inside that is close to the O/D of the bushing and pull it through with a threaded rod into a small section of pipe that is larger than the O/d of the bushing. In essence you are creating a small puller that you can tighten the threaded rod through.

4)Leave them alone if the wear seems acceptable, worst case you have to revisit due to some clunking in the rear end. I would make sure they have not got oblong on you and go with it. I did replace mine with the fenders off and that made it a lot less of a hassle.

Thanks. It amazes me that "the supplier" sells the nuts as needed extras and supplies them on the pins also. The most annoying thing was the pins with the flat section that did not fit on the shackle and the front attachment. I had to grind them off to fit. Not a biggie but slows down everything and not what I paid for.

Hi TH, Glad you finally ran into some trouble [Just Kiddin.

Lay the spring down on its side. p;ace a large socket under the eye to act as a catcher. Find an additional socket about the same size as the bush [wee bit larger] use it to drive the bush out . After the socket penetrates the spring eye about half way, CUZ it expands the spring eye, the bush will fall out--Hope this helps--KEOKE

Keoke, the bush I having trouble with is installed on the rear flang that takes the pin for the lower shackle. It is the one with the grease fitting.
