TR2/3/3A Installing pusher fan in TR3

Ordered a Hayden 12 fan today. Now I have to ask. Can I complete this installation through the grill opening? What are your experiences with the "through the radiator" fasteners?

I installed an electric pusher on the TR3A w/o removing the nose. I had to slightly modify the edges of the fibreboard shroud to fit the outer edge of the fan -- you will probably find this easier to do if you remove the shroud (which means removing the grille, which means removing the bumper guards, etc).

Here is a series of photos that show what I used in lieu of the thru the radiator attachments:

Had to slightly oval the holes in the mounting tabs...

Stayed firmly mounted for many years before I finally discarded it in favor of a tropical fan.

I like that George. Apparently the Hayden width just spans the radiator perfectly? I'm never that lucky.

Edit: I see now that you didn't use a Hayden. Hopefully they're similar.

Here is another mounting option. My car came like this and I plan to do the same thing when it finally gets back together. Notice there are 2 flat steel bars, one on top and one on the bottom. They are bent and drilled to allow the fan to be close to the radiator, and not interfer with the hand crank. I don't know if it could be installed without removing the apron...fan_mounted.jpg

My method does mount the fan a bit lower but I was still able to use the crank hole by removing one of the ribs from the fan guard. Inserting the crank just pushed the blades out of the way if they happened to be stopped in front of the hole.

But as I recall, Luke has eliminated the hole in the radiator anyway.

What are your experiences with the "through the radiator" fasteners?
I used them for a long time on two different cars; never had a problem. Asked my radiator guy about them and he thought they were OK as well. His suggestion was to install them so they don't rub against the radiator tubes, which makes sense but may be somewhat difficult to control in practice.

this winter I installed a Hayden fan w,o removing the apron but I did remove the grill and bumper. Also used the through fasteners. Everything went very well with good results.

Good to hear. Did you wire in a controller? If so, where did you tap the water temperature?

My experience has been that they draw too much amperage (I havea generator) and the fan can actually block the air on the freeway. Heck if itis raining at night with the heater on I am way over the top. I run with atropical fan on one and a yellow fan (painted black) on the other with theradiators in great shape. I live in a cooler climate, but in the summer we canget 100f and I have not had any problems, but I did with the fan.

Russ,
I got an installation kit from FLAPS which included a probe that pressed into the radiator, between the tubes, much like the mounting pins.

Another thought regarding the electric fan and the draw of current. When the sun is down, and I need headlights, or it's cold and I need he heater, or it's raining and I need the defogger or wipers, it's really not hot enough to use the electric fan anyway.
