Austin Healey 3000 BJ7 gearbox rebuild

How frustrating to not be able to locate gearbox parts.
All I need is the original outer 1st gear, (the one with the straight cut gears). All the usual sources have discontinued this item. I know, Denis Welch makes new ones, however, there for a BJ8 and won't fit a BJ7 or early model without replacing mainshaft etc. etc big $$$.

Okay, now I'm asking; Does anyone PLEASE have a usuable 1st gear outer part??

I seldom use 1st gear so I'm not looking for a perfect example just one that's better than this;

Have you checked with British Car Specialists? If they don't have new, they might have a good used part.

I wish. It looks so perfect, that I have to think it was either done with a robot, or at least on a motorized table.

No, that's the way I received it from Quantum.

I don't know Randy, they told me they don't work on/ have parts for Austin Healey. They did reccomend a British supplier that "just down the road" from them, I think it was called Atlanta British parts. Anyway, no luck there.

British Car Specialists will send me just the outer 1st gear but they emphasized I won't be happy with them, due to the differences. I'm supposed to call David today and talk some more. Their complete set for 1st gear is around $700.

BTW has anyone ever heard of restoring gear teeth on a gear? I seen a machinist working on a gear set for a Lotus and he emphasized it can be done.

Several years ago I bought one from Hemphill's Healey and then returned it because I really didn't need it (or the expense). It was an OEM part. It might be worth a try.

Hello Johnny,

The pictures that Randy Forbes posted is really the only reliable way to do the job. Healey laygears have been repaired this way for over 20 years successfully that I know of.

The building up of gear teeth can be done without doubt but it's not a successful a way to do the job.

It may be alright for a Lotus to have gear teeth rebuilt and then machined back but Healey's produce something called "Torque" from their engines and it's usually at reasonably low RPM. Lotus engines don't produce any of this stuff at least not in any great numbers.

johnny, "quantum doesnt have any healey parts" best you check the phone number you used, every time ive been there im ars deep in em!, i traded him a 3000 o.d. i rebuilt for a bunch of new parts for my trans. rebuild and when i was done tested it on his machine,, maybe he got into toyotas
