2 Complete 948's & 3 Smoothies - Sorta Free

I need to get some "junk" out of a friends garage and don't really want to "clutter" up my bigger garage. Have 2 948's, both should run, have good compression, as I remember.....and 3 smooth case trannys, condition unknown. One engine and tranny I purchased in Knoxville when I thought I wanted to restore my 60 Bugeye back to original. The other engine came with the car, it was purchased in Ft. Worth. A spare smooth case was included.

I have since acquired a 1275 rebuilt at Rivergate that is matched with a Datsun 5 speed. I don't really see the need to keep the original parts. However, I probably should keep at least one.

If anyone desires a 948 and one or two smoothies I would part with them for 1 beer (if you pick them up). The cost for delivery is 2 beers (plus gas, or more beer).

If I am not going to use them someone else should, ...err.. at least one.

Given that I drove to Ft. Worth to get the project, then to Knoxville for the engine and trans and then again to North Carolina to get the 1275.......Delivery is not really a problem if it is within a tank of gas (+/- 300 miles from Bridgeport, WV) Oddly enough when in NC picking up the engine there was a 73 TR6 there also......hmm, came home with that too (after coming home to get the trailer and going back).

The board seems to be filled with folks worth meeting. If an offer arises that helps me clean house, er garage, I might be up for it.

As a side note, I spun the original engine and the compression seemed to be well above 100, which seems high. I seem to remember a post from a year or two ago when I checked. I will go back and look for it. If true that would tell something not quite ordinary.

Any takers?

Darn, free engines so far away. Oh well, one of these days.

Boy, your only a little over 200 hundred miles away and I have plenty of beer. But, alas, I have a spare 948 and two spare trannies already and no spare cars to put them in.

I hope you find a good home. You have made a generous offer there.

Not real sure but think a 948 warmed well over is about right for me. You know 295 head, cam, H2 carbs, 1275 exhaust, .060 over, balanced, lightened flywheel, that kind of stuff.

I went back and looked at one of my old posts and the compression test on the engine that came in the car was 160-170. Seems kinda high without some head work or other being done. Also, too high for all the pieces to be gunked up as was suggested. It is painted robin egg blue (who did that to an A engine?) and the engine plate is missing. Leads me to think it has been out of the car and "worked" on.

estearns,
I am in the process of having a 1275 put in my BE and it is painted the same blue. I have seen some pictures of 1275s which are also painted that blue. Does anyone know why this might be?

I have seen a couple of them too! regardless, it is not the way they came from the factory (as far as I know!) I believe the only way they came originally is in that BMC green! It could be that Morris engines were painted that blue (I really have no idea!) and the engines came from one of them!

That sounds like a good thread. What colour these a-series engines came in. I've seen lots of different factory colours myself. Just can't remember them all and which cars they were in.

Erstearns, good to hear that another Northern Virginian is on the forum. I'm from Falls Church / Merrifield.

Regarding colors I believe that most everything from the BMC factory (if that is the correct term), at least as it regards Bugeyes and other sprites, was the well known green. Although I think there is some difference between years and sprites vs Big Healey's etc.

There are a few good threads awhile back regarding what is the correct color. From perusing them I learned that rattle can color can be altered with ambient temp, can pressure, paint coat thickness etc.

I looked at some of the examples and decided I liked the product from Hirsch the best, as compared to Moss etc.

Seems this chain has strayed to engine paint color and that is more fun to debate than whomever needs a few old 948's.

As for Northern Virginians we are like dandelion seeds, everywhere and hard to get rid of.
