Too far north to know proper tomato use w/ seafood.

To me it isn't a New England thing anyway. I don't consider Manhattan "New England".

Aside from that the only decent seafood is in New England anyway. Tomatoes or not. And for the record, I'm a native southerner.

So the NY stuff is red?

We'll have to disagree 'bout the location of decent seafood. MOst stuff here hits the stores only a coulple of hours after floppin' 'round on the deck.

Nuthin' like meetin' the boat when it comes in !!!

What with much of New England being bordered by the Atlantic, boat-fresh seafood is pretty common. Y'know, the Gloucester fishermen, and all that? You'll find fishing boats making port from NY to Maine. The best is getting lobsters right off the boat in Maine and into the pot ready to eat a few minutes later. Some restaurants literally carry them off the boat to the kitchen. There's a reason they have <span style="font-style: italic">New England</span> Clam Chowder too - they've got the clams to make it with, not to mention the traditional New England Clam Bake.

Oooo - BIG mistake, I ate there, we were in Bar Harbor July 4th - it was a blast!

Not a mistake in my mind. Vacationed there back about 82, went fishing for mackrel while mom was picking mussels. we were camping down by the water and by the time things were ready to eat we had several visitors checking out the fine smells that made there way through the camp.

That's one big reason to go there. Off the boat, in the pot, on your plate.

And now you can get 'em fresh from the water at $3 a pound! Not good for the lobstermen but great for any tourist.

Yeah. I don't think the local guys are making a killing doing it. I know some of them have deals with the restaurants so it's not necessarily purely "by the pound" for everyone.

These guys in Hyannis though. Different story. Big bucks just in the boats, they go hundreds of miles out for big catches.

$5 per bug last time I stopped for some. By coincidence today we're headed over to get some for supper. Hint: Avoid any larger than about 1.5 lbs. The small ones taste better - especially "chix" if you don't mind the work involved.

Tough business. Notice that 99.9% of lobstering is done by small businessmen. No big outfits. The other .1% are individuals on old recreational licenses.

Re the car on the boat - it was the fellow's cabin! (This is not common on lobster boats).

There are some references to it in the bangor newspaper. (Note - the "Long Island" they refer to is just off the coast of Portland ME. It's not the place down south in NY.)

By coincidence (I presume) there's a lobsterman's convention going on near here. Average price at the boat last year to dealers was about $2.83.

Say hi & tell your pal we had almost no winter. We did, however, have the usual power outages. He'll understand if you tell him that "CMP" is now vying w/ Lucas for the "Prince of Darkness" title.
