Your input on Kumho kr21 155/80r 13 tires

Please forgive me ahead of time, I did the search and have yet to find likes or dislikes on said tire. As of now I have 1555/80 13 by Champiro and they are just about shot. I am in need of tires and not to many choices to be had locally. Could I use a different size tire on a stock 68 sprite? The guy at Walmart was really churching Kumho kr21's up. I have read so much about rubbing that I am lost as to what would work. I don't race, but I do love twisty back roads. I'm sorry to ask such a crazy question, just need a kick in the right direction. Thanks Willy.

Can you get a Kuhmo Sense in that size? The KR21's look to be a pretty hard compound.

'Don't know if this helps, but I run 175/70 13's on 5" alloy rims on my Bugeye. They fit without rubbing and I would imagine they should also fit your 68 sprite.

I have no clue about the compound of tires to tell the truth. Never had a car with 13's and ever place I go looks at the car and laughs. Local shops don't carry much in 13's if at all. So I'm in deep left field, sorry if I am beating a dead horse. Thanks

I got my 175/70 13's at America's Tires (aka Discount Tire). IIRC, they are made by Fisk. Looks like they have stores in Louisville and Bowling Green, but then I guess those aren't that close to McRoberts, KY. :confusion:

Yeah I'm a little out in the woods. Thanks for the input, I will see if I can have a local shop order them for me. My little car sticks out like a sore thumb. A few MG's around but have yet to meet another Austin. Thanks for all the help.

Sears has 8 tires in that size!

175/70R13 might rub on a square arch car.

Thats what I'm worried about. Would I be better off going back with a 155/80? I checked out Coker classic and they want $548 for a set of 4.

I'm running the Kumho kr21's 155/80r 13's on my '76 and have no complaints. Granted that are not a performance tire but they were affordable and I was trying to resurrect the car from a 25 year slumber so I had other areas I needed to spend the money on. Mine ride smooth and seem to have some decent grip. I'd say they run quite, but with the top down almost always I can't tell. Over all I’d say a good average tire.

Thanks RichBall, I have 155/80's on mine and they must have been a good tire. They seem tall and skinny. I don't mind the height as back roads around here can be rough, but would love a wider tire. I understand the money issue, this car has sat in a garage for years. I have had to replace all brake lines, wheel cylinder's, master cylinder, clutch, fuel tank, pump.

I ran a set of 175/70-13 KR21's on an '89 CRX HF and loved them......they did not last as long as they *should* have though (~45K miles and they were bald), but they are lightweight and actually handle pretty good in the dry & wet (not so good in the snow). I changed over to the Solus KR22 when the 21's wore out and they were some of the crappiest tires I've ever used......I wish I had stuck to the KR21's.

With a 400 Tread Wear rating those aren't the stickiest around. Isn't there a sticky Vresdstine/ein?

Wear rating only tells part of the story. Tread design and side wall stiffness tells the rest. However, if the tire is a high mileage tire designed for heavier vehicles, then generally it may not be suited for light cars and fast turns.

How doe's one find out how stiff the side wall is? The current trend in side wall's makes them about as stiff as inner tube's used to be. After fitting a panhard rod to my Midget I have discovered that the sloppy handling can mainly be attributed to the tires.

Kurt.

I have no idea. I've just noticed that some seem to be stiffer than others (especially noticeable when mounting). I suppose it might be related to the load capacity?

And life gets even better, coming home from my local tire shop my radiator blows. But I guess at 49 year old this will happen. Who sells good radiators, I have a need for one now. Upgrades maybe?

You can call Peter WorldWideImportAutos (800) 362-1025 , He specializes in new old stock parts (and rebuilt shocks), but also distributes reproduction items. It is good to establish a relationship with a vendor that knows these cars. Tell him someone from the British Car Forum referred you.
