Yikes!

If I was woken up at 2:30 in the morning, went to investigate, was confronted with a stranger in my house, that then got into a scuffle with me, I would have shot him too.

Wasn't exactly a stranger, he "knew" the daughter. It wouldn't be too hard to believe said stranger didn't start it.

That's not what grabs me about this story though...

The shooter could have a real problem on his hands, more ways than one.

A scarred for life daughter for one.

The shooter could have a real problem on his hands,

Maybe but he has the " Castle Doctrine " on his side.

The deceased was an invited guest of a resident in that home... Doesn't sound like a good defense to me. The unknown details could sway it one way or the other but it looks like ANOTHER case of bad judgement trumped by worse judgement ending in death. Sad.

That might be, but if I were a seventeen year old in someone else's home at 2:30 a.m. and they can in with a gun I wouldn't give them any reason to shoot me. My hands would be behind my head and I'd be on the floor. Let them call the cops or whatever I'd rather be alive and in trouble then give a father a reason, however bad it might be, to kill me. Plus how well did the kid know the dad? He may have "known" the daughter but may have never met the dad before.
Plus, I don't know how you guys feel but in my house with my kids, I am going to be in a shoot first ask questions later mentality with any intruder.

You're missing the point, the reason he shot him was because he "knew" the daughter. The kid didn't have to do anything else.

...and that's exactly how it went down....

That's my point. If you've ever spent any time behind a rack full of dresses, you'd understand.

Oh I've been a 17 year old boy, been there done that. But I have a very strong sense of self preservation. I'd have dropped on the floor and begged for my life rather than give him any reason to take a shot at me.

I've never spent time behind a rack full of dresses, but I am wearing a dress right now, and I totally get what you mean...

Just another Friday night in the north woods.

Well now if you gonna shoot You have the the "Castle Doctrine " and the "Go ahead and make my day Law " on your side.

However, maybe the potential intruder will realize the lock on your door is for his protection.
