Long story real short, spending lots of time (all day every day) at the AMC forum, the Javelin is almost comopletely apart, trans now rebuilt, engine out (need to come down too), bay painted, half of the front suspension rebuilt, can't find brake parts, had to weld cracks in shock towers due to brake drum being badly out of balance, Kelly's aunt died- still dealing with all of that, Jav won't be reay for VH, (no mullets either, had to cut hair for funeral), dog has fleas (which are now in my bed) nephew now in Army (Intel, shipping out in July, being trained as a linguist)

Thanks for caring, it's truely touching. Thought about you guys the other day (especially Bill) I made "sweet crab" on the BBQ pit. I almost posted pics but was too busy.

Will be back soon. Gotta fab up a NLA Hurst shifter mount for an AMC forum member.(you have no idea how hard it is to get parts for these things)

I miss you guys!

Huh, and I was thinking

of aquireing this AMC Javelin

this cat has, a complete car,

a runner, fairly straight,

he'll take a grand for it.

Its been on my mind.

AMC Javelin?

Pictures (or AMC forum link to same) in the BCF "Other Cars" forum would be nice ...

hint hint

Glad you're still breathing!

Hiya Billy! Didn't they use a LOT of Chrysler stuff? IOW wouldn't a mount for a Charger/Challenger work? I know about this much: >*< regarding the internals of the things, but thought instantly of the cross-pollination.

Years ago when I was in high school my father had a 73 Javelin from new. After the first winter he got rid of it, wouldn't start below freezing no matter what the local dealer did. I wasn't really sorry to see it go, was a kinda pea green
color that did noth for its looks.

I am surprised to hear you are having trouble finding AMC parts. I was a big AMC fan back in college, they were cheap and available, no one wanted them then. Parts were not hard to come by, if you knew where to look. Have you tried AMO, they used to have a good news letter - probably internet site now. And Doc is right - AMC had no budget for parts, so they "borrowed" from the other guys. Asking for AMC parts at the box store WILL be frustrating, find the cross over application and ask for that. Also, there is no external difference in the v-8 from the 290 to the 401. They all used the same parts. So if the parts store says they don't have a part for your year, ask for the same part from a later year. Again, no budget for "unique" parts.

I thoroughly enjoyed my AMCs, had a lot of fun with them. Much maligned cars, but just like our LBCs, if you appreciate them for what they are, they are great!

Peter....back when you were in college, you could walk to the Whippet dealer and buy anything you needed for it.

Hiya Billy! Didn't they use a LOT of Chrysler stuff?

On the earlier stuff not really. Believe it or not, AMC pretty much did their own thing then. '68 still had the Borg Warner automatic. They used the same calipers 71-74 as Chrysler but not much else. If they did you'd have to really hunt to find out.

Trunnion suspension stuff can be difficult to find and 343 pistons aren't common, 71 and later is o.k. Interchange doesn't as much as you think it would. Hurst shifter mount and linkage is NLA so you gotta roll your own (which I am doing for myself as well as others) The bushings for 69 and earlier aren't correct but will "work". Trans gears for the AMC T10 NLA and you are stuck w/ used, rebuild parts avalible. Interior parts aren't reproduced as well as many other things. DRum brake parts can be found cheap but not drums, Rotors are $150 each for 71-74 jav's, $100 for Hornet, Gremlin. The good news is later AMC spindles unbolt and will swap around to anything made from '55 up (note, not the whole knuckle, the spindle itself has fout bolts and comes off, great for making trailers) I became a Wi_w__d and Aerosp_ce dealer beacause of brake parts avalibility.

Dave, buy the car. Worst case flip it and make a few $$$. What year and engine?

Seriously, buy it! I would. You can't go wrong at $1,000

AMC folks are pretty nice....but it aint BCF

Good to hear you're hanging in. We get worried when folks disappear.

+1 For that

Since you will not post a link of yours - I am forced to post this link of my friend Dave's javelin. He has owned this car since he was 16. I am dying for a pic of yours.

I sold AMC cars in the mid to late '70's. Always respected the AMX cars from the mid '60's. First Wife was met while she was driving a Rebel standard trans....

A mid-sixties American straight six would work for me as a daily!

I don;t have pics at the moment and it's raining. I thought y'all saw it already.

I'm sure at some point most of it's parts were purchased with lap dance funds...both designated and earned...

Here's a pic of the shifter mount I made. That's all I have for now.

SWEET Billy!!

Thanks Doc, it's recycled too. I bought some beat up scrap from the recycler for $1 a pound. Working real primative 'round here. All I have is a $50 Chinese drill press my buddy sold me and a Ryobi belt sander. Plate was cut w/ a circular saw w/ acarbide tipped blade. Big hole was done w/ a hole saw w/ no bit in the center and radius roughed in with the end of the belt, smoothed w/ a small file then hand sanded w/ 220. It's only for reverse plunger clearance but looks cool.

The finish is quick drags across a running belt of 80 then smoothed w/ 120, then quick drag 120 followed by walnut shell blasting. (smooths the roughness of the sanding w/o changing the look.)

It's pictured upside down. Here's how it mounts.
