Well....a working gas gauge that is!
Turns out the float was flooded - it had a hairline crack in the ridge where it mounts on the sending unit arm. Naturally unobtainium at the local parts supply places (even when I gave them the Ford part number to cross reference ((side note - ALL the Ford dealers in my area are GONE - there used to be 3-4)). I bought a tube of Seal-All (which the label says is gas and oil resistant) slobbered it all over the crack, let it set and slobbered on another thin layer. Now the gauge works! I also figured out how to adjust the throw of the needle so the gauge goes all the way to full!
Ahhh...the little joys in life!
