Hello everyone! After a long search, I am in the process of purchasing a big Healey (1967). I hope everything goes through without any hitches. I have a couple of questions for you seasoned veterans: From reading the CA smog requirements, she should be exempt, just like my MG, since she is older than 30 years; does this apply to vehicles coming from out-of-state? The other question I have is leaded gas. Does this only entail buying a lead additive and mixing it into the tank? Third question - What is the best way to bring her over here from the East? Covered cargo is bit too expensive at $1500. Does anyone know of any other alternative beside piggy backing on an 18 wheeler hauler? Thanks fellas!

1. Don't know anything about the CA smog laws so can't help there.
2. We have average 4 to 5K miles a year for the last 15 or so years on either a 67 BJ8 or 62 BT7 running premium fuel with no additive. Both engines have hardened valve seats installed. Some folks don't even think that is necessary.
3. The most fun way, and best in my opinion, is to drive it home. Unless you are buying a 'beater' to start a restoration on, what better way to bond with your Healey. The car will love it too. Depending on where it is, you could do Route 50 coast to coast. Great drive!

Bob-

Thanks for the reply. I guess the lead acting as a lubricant were not such a big factor. The car is in good condition and the drive would be fun. However, I would have to think about it.

If you follow Bob MacElwee's suggestion be sure and stop in on him in St. Louis and insist that he fix all the little things that will invariably appear. The Gateway AHClub has its very own clubhouse in member Keith Bester's garage--complete with wall-to-wall carpeting and chandelier--and I'm sure he and his members will accomodate you.

Congratulations! I shipped mine back from the Boston area last Fall. The best rate (and I really worked it!)on an open carrier was about $1,000 to the Santa Barbara area.

Good Luck!

Your smog exempt in CA.

NapoleonV...

I just emailed you...I might be able to save you tons of $$ when you register your car in CA...

Nothing illegal...but something you should know...

I found a company who can ship it in an open carrier for about less than a grand. Hopefully, it all works out. I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks everyone.

Henri, I just emailed you as well.
