I've got those selected on some of my buttons but when you get a hankering for something more upbeat than the musical styling’s of Olivia Newton John, the Captain & Tennille or the Carpenters that tend to pop up on those stations from time to time – might I suggest that you try these for a little more upbeat stuff.

Deep Tracks – Ch# 40 for “Deep” Classic Rock. Not sure what they mean by Deep but its good 60’s & 70’s stuff.
Big Tracks – Ch#46 for Early Classic Rock. More 60’s & 70’s but mostly the BIG stuff that saw most of the air play back then.
Top Tracks – Ch#49 For Later Classic Rock covering 70’s to the 90’s stuff.
 
I'll use it - if it comes with the rental car (at-
- no extra charge).
I miss the day of the live,local DJ.You could get
a feel for the area that you were travelling in.The DJ's
would give local events,etc.
Now you can hear the same DJ,from a cubicle in who-knows-where,in California,Montana,Maryland,Florida,etc....

Doug, I know what you mean. I'm actually disappointed when there is radio reception in the middle of nowhere. I miss searching the dial while between towns, trying to find stations that would come in and then guessing where they were from. As a child I was really excited once when my father and I were driving through the Mojave Desert in California. We picked up a Salt Lake City radio station. It seemed a world away! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
 
I have XM on direct-TV pumped into my stereo here. I used to have it on all the time and, I guess, if I had a long commute I might think about getting a receiver for the car. Neat stuff, but with around 20gb of music in my iPod and AM radio - what else do I need /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
 
And I thought I was really up to date last month when I got a new galena crystal and safety pin for my radio. (anybody remember crystal sets?)

By strange coincidence, I was recently wondering about XM commercials. The "same seven commercials repeated every seven minutes" on cable TV drove me nuts.

Is there a way to find out which XM stations are commercial free?

basil, upon picking up my wife's new infinity s.u.v. the sales manager explained the 3 months free offer, when i called to have the x.m. activated i was told you could only get the 3 month offer if you first signed up for a year, after a couple of additional calls to the dealer and the x.m. company i got it straightened out but think it was rather underhanded of them to be that dishonest, but we love the system especially since receiving my fav. local jazz stations are at most times impossible to tune in. wonderful variety to choose from depending on ones mood. "if music be the spice of life let the band play on." dont remember who said that. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif

Hmm, I did not have that problem with the Hyundai dealer. My XM was working when I picked up the Sante Fe, and continued for three months. Then, when it was getting close to running out, I received a letter from XM in the mail on how to subscribe if I wanted to. Sounds like your dealer maybe just didn't understand the program.
 
Never had any problems with the ex-GF's Envoy Denali's XM. Got the first three months and like you Basil it worked the day we drove it off the lot.

Only problems we've had is with GM's "On-Star" & built in car phone set-up because they're two seperate contracts. You've got to stay on top of the minutes & when your contract expires. If you have any minutes left at the end of the contract - you lose them if you don't renew. Not a big deal - but I don't like the idea that they'll remind you about the On-Star contract, but they don't remind you that the car phone contract is about to expire. However if you renew - all remaining minutes can be rolled over without any prolbems.

And as far as crystal radios go, built one as a kid. How about the six volt auto radios with the mechanical vibrators and tubes. Turn it on and listen to the hum waiting for the tubes to warm up. Then select your favorite station on the AM dial. That's all we had to choose from. Ah the hours spent listening to Wolfman Jack.

I was driving back from Santa Barbara to St. Louis with the old man and around midnight in Green River Utah I picked up the great KMOX in StL - one of the old "BlowTorch" AM stations that grandfathered in with 50,000 watts on the transmitter. Felt like we were almost home. KFI here in Los Angeles is another one of these monsters and I used to listen to LA traffic when I was really bored driving home at night from some remote job in WA or OR to Portland.

Now a days it is strictly Sirius for me. Local radio even in the largest market in the US is just a wasteland. Hopefully the merger with XM will go through so I can get the baseball broadcasts too.
 
I've picked up knx 1070 all the way out in south western ND. Was funny listening to la's traffic reports going down I 94. I switched over to Sirius a few months after they launched and it's been one of the best investments I've made to my truck. I'm not looking forward to the merger of the 2 companies and hope it's blocked by the gov. I have a strong feeling if it happens costs are going to go up programming will change for the worse and commercials will suddenly show up on the music channels.

I listen to WSB (Atlanta) in the mornings here in Florida, and WBZ (Boston) at night sometimes.
 
I had an hour long tape made of the LA station, one of them, and played it in my Land Cruser in Sudan when folks visited.

Boy were they impressed with our radio gear till we spilled the beans.

Just before a Jan. 6, 1969 deployment to the Western Pacific, the ships Interior Communications Techs. taped two months of music from the local stations in Long Beach, CA. For the next four months we got to listen to Christmas Music.
