When I apply the brakes lightly the brakes stick and for a moment though the spring returns the peddle, the master cylinder has not returned. After a few seconds the brakes release. If I stop and mash the brakes there is no stick.
Any suggestiions as to where I should start to look to solve this problem would be appreciatied. The car is a 1971 series 2 OTS. Thanks

The master cyl is your culprit.. Is your brake fluid new or old? Those cylinders are really suseptible to moisture damage, and old brake fluid is not good for that as it absorbes quite a bit of moisture over the years..

A common problem with most old brake systems is, as the "outermost" seal begins to deterioriate and swell, it can block the tiny "Bleed-Off" hole the the bore of the M/C itself.. Also, as noted by the other poster, dirty brake fluid can cause problems.. the "crud" can also block this little hole..
As a test, the next time your brakes "lock", jump out (after pulling off the road to a safe place) and "crack" a bleeder valve on any one of your calipers.. if you get a squirt of brake fluid that's under pressure, the culprit it the tiny hole in the M/C.. a rebuild (or replacement) is the only cure.
I should add that rust on the caliper "pivot points" can also cause the sticking condition.. In short, it may be time to "go thru" your brake system and make sure it's 100%.

Try to clean and de-crud the reaction valve on the end of the master cylinder.....semi-common problem.

Also....I'll add my vote for a flush and bleed of the brake system if it's been a while.

Be sure to use Castrol GT LMA only....
