Does anyone know how the factory side mirror was attached to the door? Sheet metal screws, nut on inside, etc. I want to remove the mirror and possibly fix/replace -- but I don't want to remove door panels if possible. The mirror itself is a bit wobbly -- not the mounting stem. Thanks

The base gasket has expandable "nuts" that fit through the door. When you twist the base to place the sheet metal screws in and tighten, the "nuts" flare in the metal door. If you car has been re-sprayed, you may have metal nuts inside the door.

If its the mirror I'm thinking of, your going to have to remove the door panel. Pretty sure there is a big nut underneath the mirror, inside the door. Mirror is also spring loaded. Door panels are not that bad to remove. Remove the arm rest first,then the inside door handle, then window crank. Use flat blade screwdriver or something close to that to pop the spring fasteners out. That should be about it, its been a while since I pulled one.

Spring loaded bit is attached to the mirror base, NOT through the door. These mirrors where produced by TEX and fitted with an oval looking head. The base is somethimes reffered to a "boomerang base". If the base gasket is original, it shold be off white in colour.
The only mirror that I know of that has a large nut at the base is a wing mirror. That would be fitted through your bonnet and not the door.
