XJS Trans Computer?

First off, I'm sorry for the vagueness of my question to follow.
I was offered a deal on a late 80's, early 90's car (I don't remember the year) that is in nice shape, but was told of an ongoing semi-problem. It seems the trans will occasionally stick in 2nd gear, maybe for a few minutes, maybe for a few days. A mechanic told me there is probably nothing wrong with the trans, but with the computer. It is supposed to be @ $1500 to replace, and will cure all ills. Does this make sense to anyone? Are there other options?

Sounds about right I would think. Wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion from a dealer maybe, but if the car is that much of a bargain, and all it will take is $1,500 to fix it, then you are still ahead of the game.
