1991 xjs facelift.left heater control switch has lack of illumination how do you remove this for replacement? how does tape/radio come out?

It is illuminated by a fiber optic cable from down by the shifter. Removing the radio is easy. Remove both heater knobs,( they just pull off) and unscrew the retainers underneath them. This can be done with a small screwdriver, of a pair of needle nose pliers. Then the whole front plate will pull off. The fiber optic should connect near the bottom, and the other side is a mirror image. If it is connected there, remove the center console wood, and check if it is plugged in at the cell next to the shifter. Good luck.

Removed facia plate and found two 12v 1.2w filament lamps, one either side. the left one had blown, this has now been replaced once I managed to prise it open. Now about this fibre optic, I found one hanging around when facia was removed there is no light output even if you cup your hands around it in the dark and look right in. Cant find anywhere it could fit as both heater controls are now lit, the only thing I have noticed is the slider for the face vent under the radio has AIR written on it Iam sure this used to be lit up but it isnt anymore............
