The gas gage on my 91 xjs floats up and down . I have checked the ground wire and it seems ok.
Is the sending unit easy to change ??
 
Is your car a convertible or a coupe?

Remove the spare. The verticle carpetis mounted with velcro on convertibles. Disconect the battery. You should be able to see the sender.

You will have to decide if removal is difficult based on clearance and patience.
