In preparation of Top Gear forthcoming season! What a great comparison – chose your preferred weapon and let the mayhem begin.

Jag's XJRR vs. The DB7 GT

While it ain't an Aston - I love the XJRR! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif Too bad it'll never be made. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

BTB – I don’t know when we get in over here on this side of the pond but sources say the new season kicks off January 28th.

"...presumably for the American market - to remind them they're in a car."

LOVE IT! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Yes, despite my love of his wit – Jeremy does seem to have a hard time controlling his wisecracks about Americans.

Whats that all about?

I greatly enjoy the automotive content, but he does go a bit farther than good-natured ribbing. At times (more often than not) he is hyper-critical of all things American from culture to food (a Brit criticizing American food...that's rich) to our cars...which makes a bit more sense.

Even then, however, he ignored the obvious. For instance, he was going on about how the upcoming Dodge Challenger will be "rubbish" and suggested that a proper "muscle car" is something like a BMW M6 or some such European creation which sells for 2 to 3 times what the Challenger will.

Who will dispute that the M6 is a better car that the Challenger will be? Not me- now get me a new one under $30,000, and you have a point.

Touche'!

That video is pretty funny but I’ve seen first hand worst driving in my travels to other countries. So it still doesn't explain why Jeremy seems compelled be so critical about “all things” American and not just our driving habits.

Heck I’ve caught him slip a zinger into a topic about a car or something totally unrelated to any thing American.

Don’t get me wrong I absolutely love the show and chuckle at some of Clarkson’s ranting about us on this side of the pond. But I suspect if he & I where sitting in a pub together having a couple of pints – I wouldn’t be offended. But I can guarantee I’d dust off a few of my old jokes about British culture as well as some of my more colorful comments about the British auto industry. All in good fun of course. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

We (Americans) are very easy targets. There is a view among some foreigners that we pretty much live in Disneyland. If you spend a good amount of time living outside the United States, and look back at the US through the eyes of a foreigner its pretty easy to see where that view comes from.

I really enjoy visiting other countries for extended periods of time. Immersing myself in to the local culture etc... so that I can really experience the differences.

At the end of the day(month, year, whatever) though I still feel very lucky to come home to the US. Even with all of our problems. There is no place like home. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

This is true, However, some people in the "Old Country" don't
understand how "big" the US actually is, for example, if I walk
out my front door, and hop in my '76 Capri, then drive due east,
it'll take me 7+ hours to reach the next state. Some people here
in the US can't even seem to grasp that concept, New Englanders
to be specific... So our cars are large and comfy, with suspensions
that "ooze" down the highways and byways, but those cars are made
for the American roads, mainly the super highways...

Think about it for a few minutes...

How can anyone take his jabs seriously ?

He is just having a little fun,

And he is in a country where you drive a few hundred miles and drive off the edge /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Agreed. But like I said – I like Jeremy & think I’d enjoy having a pint or two with him while we tell lies and tall tails to one another. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

It just seems like there’s a disparity between jokes about Americans & everyone else. In fact from what I’ve seen I’d wager he’s done more digs on us than the French and Germans combined. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Monty Python skits more than make up for jabs against the Germans and French. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

No joke there. Many "Old Country Citizens" have difficulty in grasping the size of our states. Don't even try to explain our population density (or lack there of) figures for western states (not including Southern California).

I've been fortunate enough to have traveled to all 50 states. Have driven through all of the lower 48. Flew to Hawaii and Alaska, drove while I was there though. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I hit every state East of the Rocky Mountains (plus a few on the West side of them) in a year and half while racking up 110,000 miles on a company vehicle. That is a LOT of windshield time. I know from first hand experience just how big some states are let alone the US as a whole.

Good point...we all drive like those yahoos...I mean growing up in Michigan and driving on frozen roads from November to March every year didn't teach me anything more than those who live in a nearly snowless area. All of us drive alike. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif
