I'd consider that a real honor to do the finding and the returning.
A local news show did a story about a military medal collector here. He described what he does which, in brief, is historical research and artifact preservation. I was stunned to learn how often awards are discarded by families who just don't know and don't care. No interest in how they were earned or what they mean. Just stuff to get rid of.
