There was a bidding war for the S1 registration plate
Edinburgh's first car number plate has fetched almost £400,000 at auction.

The registration "S1" was originally bought in 1903, the year registration numbers were introduced.

The winning bidder in Friday's auction said it <span style="font-weight: bold">would now be displayed on an old red Skoda</span> which will be seen around the Midlands.

I sort of doubt that the Skoda will be an Octavia or any other VW based car. Skoda is one of the worlds oldest manufacturer of cars having passed the 100 mark a few years ago.

More money than sense.

When I still lived in the olde country I saw A3 on a Bentley back in the 70's.

For those still over there, assuming the plate you want is available in Pennsylvania it will cost you the grand sum of $20.

I suspect someone with an extreme sense of irony is going to mount it on an old banger of a Skoda- one so fully depreciated that its tyres will be worth more than the rest of the car. :jester:

And then park it next to the Bentleys and Astons and Status-mobiles at the Polo match and walk away smirking....

I certainly hope the guy has a really good locking device on that plate. Talk about a theft target!

If I ponied up $800,000 for a license plate, dang sure I'm putting it on a Bugatti Royale.....or something else 8 figures plus....

Indeed-I used to work with a girl who's initials were D.D. (stop laughing at the back, Doc!). She got the only registration in Illinois that said "Deuce 91" (her nickname in high school and the year she graduated*). Her plates were constantly getting nicked.

I think the same thing happened to the one guy who had the registration "Chicago". Stuff like that is why I wouldn't bother with a custom registration number.

*I am unsure of the number-I'm pretty sure it was the year she graduated, in might have been the year she was born.

...kinda surprised she hadn't been tagged "DBL DEE". :smirk:

Diesela wears her name on her tag here. Doubt anyone will bother to snipe THAT tho.

A pal in Maine has had the state name as a tag for generations now. Not heard of any thefts of that'n either. I think it's now on the vehicle with "s*#t-house screws" tho. The one-way, ramped ones.

You and me both. But, she was a tough kid-she'd a kicked the snot outta anyone who dared call her something like that! In the interests of gentlemanly behaviour* I won't comment on whether or not it would have been appropriate.
