Went to a small car show today 47 cars. Two classes stock and modified. Nice folks, neat cars. Ten trophies each class.

Miss Agatha was the only sports car in the place and the judges had no clue.

Think I will stick to shows that are judged with antique sports car classes. Well you know what I mean.

Well, Jack at least the weather was nice enough to take Miss Agatha out and show her off a bit!!

How many people asked if you could "put a 350 in that thing?"

Noop, folks seemed to like it. Lots of pics taken and I drew a crowd.

However, when a 2007 vet gets a trophy it is just too much.

Was the show sponsored by the Corvette club?

When I go to shows, I go to talk about cars and socialize. I never go for the trophy.

Yep, talk about, enjoy etc etc.

However I saw the judgeing across the board and they had no clue as to what was correct and what was not. I think the judges just picked what they liked without any thought to how it was done or even if it was correct. Heck they had no clue.

Why should a person be able to go to a dealer and buy a new car, take it to a show and win. That is really stupid in my opinion.

We're livin' in th' past, Jack. Now the cars are so "automagic" there's not much the owners can do to 'em besides wheel/tyre changes and stickin' those fake Buick "portholes" to the front wings... It's ALL stupid, IMO. Buncha posers with good credit is all.

I'm with youse guys: stoopid.

Went to a car show over in the country near here last year, there were about fifty-some cars of various description, some very nice, new and old.

A brand-new (3,000 miles) Ford Mustang with a "custom" interior (ugh, it looked worse than a pimp's bedroom) won the show. One of the ugliest cars I've seen recently, the guy easily had $20K+ in "custom" stuff in it. The wheels must have cost $5,000 alone (and they were awful - spinners). If you gave me this car, I'd hide it until sold.

Also in the show: a perfect '63 Impala SS (stock - beautiful); a Morgan Plus Four, very nice (the "judges" didn't even stop when they "inspected" it, kept walking by!!); a lovely, bone stock '49 Plymouth; a cool rat rod, etc., and other very nice cars.

Finally, the "judges" announced their brilliant decision: the 2007 pimpmobile Mustang wins the "best car" trophy, with applause from the crowd (but not mine)!

Sheesh, it's enough to give you a headache! Clueless, emotional judging. What's the point? How does one become such a "judge", I wonder????

Jack,

That's the reason, I don't mess around with Hot Rod shows too much anymore. I drove up to Ticonderoga (2.5 hours) to participate in a pretty large show, (500+ cars) I got lumped in the "foreign" class and got beat my a 2006 BMW Z4. I think the only thing the guy did to prepare for the show was wash it. The folks were nice but didn't have a clue.

I like to go to cruise in's and stuff, but only "show" my car in British shows.

You have to look for the shows that don't allow cars that are newer than certain years! Keeps the rif-raf out!

What should that year be for LBCs?

Good point, usually the cut off is 1980. Keeps the ricers out too!

Then again, I don't mind looking at all cars and having fun with their owners. Awhile ago, one local stereo shop had a ricer show. I pullled in with my B and popped the hood! I had a great time, chatting with all the guys, I enjoyed their cars as much as they enjoyed mine. I tried to explain that an MG was the original sports tuner! That went over their heads, but to some degree gear heads are gear heads. There are just many flavors.

Gotta agree!!! With those judges, it is obviously who you know, NOT what you know!!!

I saw the very same thing at the Eurofest car show. Heck they were turning away classic cars that had trouble or whatever and were later getting there but were still there before the start and they only allowed so many cars, but there must have been 20 or so new style minis in there that could have just been bought off the lot. There should definitely be a 20 year old limit or something for car shows. If I want to see new or fairly new cars I can just go to a dealer, right?

This is one of the reasons why I like our local British Field Day so much. No judging at all, just a nice field of British cars and bikes. Super relaxed, and usually draws a good crowd of cars and spectators.

I will in the future stick with judged shows for antique Brit cars only. Or at least a special class for such.

I enjoy looking at the others and talking to the folks but don't want to compete except amoung my own.

Yep, learned a good lesson. Next time I am so inclined I will tootle up the road in one of the clubs Model A's and enjoy the ride and company.

Even so, Jack, there will be times that you will be disappointed if you're in it for the hardware. There's one large "Brit" show in particular that awards trophies on a "Peoples Choice" basis, i.e., all show participants get a ballot and can vote. Problem is, over half the attendees are all members of the sponsoring club...guess who wins??? My, my, my...the politics involved in the vote counting... Oh yes, the clubbers will tell you right up front that you won't be considered if you trailered!!! So, it's really not about the cars, but whether you are a club member...AND part of the political click...and the means of conveyence to the show.

You were right in your earlier comment...go, meet nice folks, enjoy the day, have fun! I've found that when I do that, I usually find it more pleasant to leave just about the time the awards are being handed out...

Dog Show, Car Show, Horse Show ... why are they not called contests? Maybe the primary and original purpose was for participants to show what they have accomplished because of pride. We 'mericans are too competitive. I'll now get off my soapbox before I'm shoved.

Guess I could always leave the tow vehicle and the trailer at the local mall and drive to the site. LOL
