Wonky Wiper

Driver's side wiper (natch) is wonky.

If I position both wipers on the splines so they are in the correct parked position, after about 20 minutes of running, the driver's side will continue going until it's off the bottom of the windscreen (BJ7) onto the bodywork. The passenger's side will continue to work properly.

Originally, I thought the splines either on the wiper motor or wiper arm were stripped, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Instead, it seems like the wheelbox gets a mind of its own after a while and ignores the parked position and just keeps bringing the wiper arm past park.

Only thing I can think of is the spiral cable isn't meshing properly with the gear wheel in the box, but I dread getting myself upside down to check that out. Anyone else have any bright ideas before I experience a non-chemical head rush?

There's two halves, so to speak, that holds the gear assembly tight for each wiper and they could have come loose. They really are tightened together tightly and I've never seen one loosen by its self but it could happen by a PO working on the car.

Getting ready for the British Invasion in Stowe, VT this weekend and saw some rain in the forecast, so I finally had to address this. Got upside down under the dash and sure enough, the wheelbox halves were a bit loose and the spiral cable not meshing correctly. Lot harder to do this thenwhen I was 16 years old working under my bugeye dash. Also fixed my passenger window that wouldn't roll-up. After undoing the 3,049 screws holding the trim panels on, I found the channel from the lifting arm had pulled away from the bottom of the window. All fixed now. Still hope there's no rain and I won't need to test these out.
 
RainX works a treat. When did you ever see a California Hot Rod with wipers?

It never rains in Southern California...

Conversely, it never seemed to stop raining__during the winter__in San Francisco. I'd still keep the tops down on both the Healey and MGB, relying only on their tonneau covers.

Just to keep people from thinking I was crazy (!) I'd put the top up on the MGB for the entire month of March each year. :crazy:
