MGB Wobbly steering

Now the proud owner of a 1979 MGB. So I am finding out the previous hurt it has suffered. Right now my question is can I pull the steering wheel and the steering shaft (inner column) without removing anything else?

WOW! That is scary! I think I'd replace the whole steering column; probably about as difficult as trying to fix it (maybe even easier), and there are usually several of them on eBay at any given time.
