On installing my nice new wood rimmed steering wheel i found that there is a bit of play on the steering shaft at the top.
I see that there is a felt gasket at the top of the shaft, is this the only thing that holds the shaft central or should there be a bearing/bush to stop the wobble ?

I do remember a similar problem with my installation. If the gap isn't too bad you can drive in 3 or 4 small wedges (drift pins) to take the slack out.

HI Chicken, yes that felt bush centers the steering shaft in the column. However, Before You tear things up to replace it try this. Using an oil can and thick oil 60 WT, oil the felt, If it is not too worn it will swell and remove the slop. Go easy on the oil just get it all around the top edge of the felt OK. --Fwiw-Keoke

Great advise thnks,i think it should be a new felt bush from memory so i'll try the oil first.
