Did it! Success... and it was pretty easy this time (as I showed them photos of the use of the plates on previous Minis). The bad news is that, dang, the price of "vanity" plates has gone up a lot here in Oregon. It now costs $214 every two years (and that's $100 more than regular plates).
What's more, they offered to have me register the Sprite as special collector car, where they give you period-looking plates (but with letters and numbers, and no choices allowed)... and THAT only requires that you register the car ONCE (and never again - which will save hundreds of dollars in just a few years). So, when renewal comes up in 2 years, I may retire the old "Boink" plates (and frame one).
The photo is a little washed out (as I brightened this night shot at the expense of flooding the plate - which as an "Oregon Trail" theme they don't use anymore).

On my 50 Chevy (gone) I had Ohio Historical plates which were a one time registration like Oregon. Then I got some nice 1950 Ohio tags when I found that the BMV allowed "Historic Model Year Tags" to be used in conjunction with Ohio Historical plates and registration which had to be kept in the car at all times. IIRC the HMYT addition took about 2 weeks to approve and cost me nothing but the price of the tags I got at a swap meet.

Not to belabor all this, but I've since learned of several cases in Oregon and Washington of people who were "caught" (stopped by police inquiring about where they were going and doing relative to the collector plate) and if you can't demonstrate the club/show connection, it's a big ticket. Not sure what constitutes proof. In the final analysis, I suppose if some patrol officer sees you all the time, you might be caught.

My Land Rover has similar restrictions, basically no driving to work. Therefore I always seem to be on the way to the garage at the university, or to the summer house.
I decided not to push my luck with the BE and went with regular personalized Ohio tags. Since Hagerty has no restrictions and I plan on driving it a lot, it seemed the best thing to do. If later on I just go to shows/events I will probably go to Historical tags to save money.
