Has anyone used the wiring harness from Advance Auto. It looks a lot better than the spagetti under the dash of my 72 TR6. I started with plans to repaint this car, now that it's darn near frame off, engine at the machine shop, etc.. this would be a good time to make some very necessary improvements, not to think of the safety issue. What I want to know is: Where are the problem areas with this conversion? Are the instructions complete? Pitfalls...advantages...I'd really like not to replace the original nightmare with another, any thoughts would be helpful. Are there other solutions than Advance Auto?
 
There are some guys on the forum that have installed them. I'm going to use it in my TR3 resto. Here's a link to their instructions. It's a lot more work then just stuffing in a new original harness, but I like the idea of the relays and the upgrade of wire gauge.
 
From what I gather, installing this harness is a major undertaking in that it follows nothing along the lines of an original harness. I am sure that Dan Masters will be more than happy to discuss this with you on the phone. He will give you all the pitfalls that you might run up against. Dan is a straight shooter. The quality of the electronics intrigues me, plus the fact that you are adding relays to areas that woefully need them. But don't expect it to be a cakewalk. The one install I have seen was done without much forethought and it was butt-ugly. I am sure if you really, really plan it out, like aircraft quality layouts, the end result would be something you would want to stare at for hours. At least I would. Give Dan a call.

Any new harness is going to look a lot better that the nest of wires often encountered when we get these cars. I personally prefer the original look of the harness and wire colors but then I have no significant electrical upgrades in place or planned. Dan's harness certainly move the pre-war TR electrics into the modern era.
 
A guy I know who's rebuilt his car from a box of bits bought it. I watched the install progress and it's pretty nice - ok its really nice - but it is a LOT of work. He had the engine and interior already out, and it was still a ton of work.

And yes at some point I would do it. If you have the insides and the engine out, then now is the best opportunity you'll ever have.
