wires-proper order

My son removed the wires from 1974 spitfire- what is proper placement for firing order 1-3-4-2?

I'm not familar with the spit in particular, but I can tell you how to put the wires on any vehicle if you know the firing order.

Remove the distributor cap, and crank the engine and note the direction the rotor turns. Then bump or turn the engine until it gets to TDC on the timing mark. Now, the rotor is either pointing at #1, or #4 cylinder. If the valve cover is off, the cylinder that has both valves closed is the one that is on the firing stroke.

OK, the valve cover isn't off...assume that the rotor is pointing at #1 cylinder. See which tower on the distributor the rotor points to. Make that number one. Since you know what direction the rotor is turning, the next wire is...you guessed, #3. Then #4, then #2. If when you try to start the car, it backfires and farts and poops, you're 180 degrees out. Just swap #1 with #4 and #2 with #3.

[/ QUOTE ] The distributor should run counterclockwise. In a "normal" condition, the #1 wire would be around 11:00, #3 at around 8:00, #4 at around 5:00 and #2 at around 2:00 -- give or take an hour each way. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
