Wire Wheels

Jack - I think its great that you're trying things...that's how we all learn - one guy tries something, another guy takes it farther, we all benefit!

Now, I've gotta go see how to remove the hinges from my MGB GT SCCA car & replace them with pins...any closeup photos?

I took a bunch of new pictures of my car today so you can see the hood pin set up I am using. There are lots of photos so I'll just link you to my website again (which I am modifying right this very moment). Stay tuned!
JACK

Ah, Jack - you kept the hinges...I was thinking about doing away with them completely & going to just pins on all 4 corners

You can use four pins and have the hinge too. I have a sprite racer in the shop that has pins though the hinges and pins in the front. You can lift it like a normal hood or remove the rear pin clips and remove the whole hood. I usually just open the hood.

Well, the hood on my MGB GT racer opens all way to straight up...just thought pins would be lighter than hinges

I'm a real believer in Colin Chapman's "add lightness" theory....so I'm always looking!

Yeah. Much of my car has been inspired by a desire to remove unnecessary weight. These cars are really heavy for their size and with the power output, they need all the help they can get. Considering all of the other weight I removed, I figured leaving the hinges in for convienience was well worth the trade off. You get the best of both worlds.

JACK

My racer has external hood and trunk hinges (OK, "bonnet" and "boot").
Normal hood pins in front part of hood (trunk has those rubber things).
To remove hood, I pull hood pins and hinge pins. Then lift hood and slide to right (both hinge pins point to the right).
Since hood will hinge more than 90 degrees, I don't need to remove hinge pins too often..
Sort of ugly, but very light and simple.

I just wish the site wasn't that blue/black combo with the small 8-sized print...I have to back out of it after a little reading to keep from getting a headache...I think he explained about the headlight but I was getting tired of reading through that combination.

If your mouse is so equipped, if you hold the control key down and roll the mouse wheel you can change font size on websites.

Also works by holding down control key and hitting the plus or minus signs.

Bruce and Tony,
When I was in updating my websight I actually partially kept the blue/black scheme for the sidebar stuff but now all of the text is white-on-black just for you guyrs. Feel free to take another peek.

Aero,
That looks like a great pin set-up. I have admired your car and your racing pictures on BCF ever since I joined.

I'm hoping to get around to putting the boot on pins someday but since my car is still for the street and parking in public places, I have to be real careful about how easy the access is not just for me but for everyone else! That's why I put those (crappy) locking pins on the hood. I'm sure I'll come up with something and I promise I'll share it with you guys when I do /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hi Joel,
Did you ever hear back from Dave Bean? Did they say the Elan rims would work on your car? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Greg,

I never heard back from them. But, I did find the Superlite wheels webpage...pretty cool stuff there. A bit spendy though.

Joel

Spendy? I thought the prices were good -- even excellent compared with some Moss prices on similar items.

Hi Joel,
Well, don’t look at custom wire wheels then, I spent $1500 for some Dayton’s. I ordered them the day before their price increase. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif A member of this forum, DrEntropy, has an Elan. He may be able to tell you off the top of his head if the rims would work, if you were still interested. Pretty nice of me to volunteer someone I hardly know to help you, huh? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I dunno, I guess the Superlites just seem spendy compared to some of the knock-offs that are offered in the parts magazines. Then again, I guess that's why they call them knock-offs. But, if I remember correctly, the Superlite prices were in British Pounds, not USD.

Greg, I'm just in the "thinking about it" stage. I'd just like to know what kind of options are available to Spridget owners. I'm sure DrEntropy won't mind if I give him a buzz. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sorry, I had a brief mental lapse. I was referring to the prices on bolt on wheels! I don't know what I was thinking. I felt that the bolt ons were priced rather well. Since I'm not in the market for wire wheels, I'm afraid I can't comment knowledgeably.
