Wiper Motor Rebuild

Hello

I've finally got around to rebuilding my TR4 wiper motor. It works fine, but after 25 years sitting in someone's garage it could do with a makeover. I have a couple of questions

1. You can't dismantle the unit without removing the wire that runs from the motor to the top of the gearbox. So I fired up my soldering iron however it doesn't even make a dent on the solder in the box. The soldering iron is 25W and >20 years old. So, do I need a new soldering iron or did lucas use something special for these connections in their infinite wisdom?

2. The workshop manual says to fill the gearbox with Ragosine Listate grease. What is the modern equivalent of this stuff?

3. What color were these painted originally (late CT) and what's the modern equivalent?

Thanks for your help.

Myles

25 watts is just too small. That's for electronics work. I used one of those Weller gun type irons. IIRC maybe 100-150 watts?? I just used whatever grease I had laying around that I use for greasing the suspension. I cna't help you with the color of paint for the TR4. The TR3 came in two versions. One a black wrinkle, and the other a gray hammered paint. I have one pictrure of a TR4A from a Bill Piggot book that shows the field housing of the wiper motor as black. But I can't tell if it has a wrinkle finish.

Thanks for your reply and advice. I bought a new 45W soldering Iron from Sears this morning and that has done the trick. Also googled that grease and apparently you can use Shell Retinax 'A' instead. I'll try to find that before I resort to the regular grease.

My wiper motor appears to be gray hammered paint at the moment so will probably go with the same color. Anyone know where I can get this paint?

Thanks

Myles

Rust-oleum makes a hammered look gray and silver spray paint (rattle can). A local dealer can order it for you. Also check you local auto paint suppler for other lines, or a larger auto parts store.

I've seen that Rust-O-Leum hammered grey paint at Home Depot.
