Winter Projects

It's been a little quiet around here.

So... What projects do people have planned for the winter months?

I'm going to continue tuning my Sprite, and start on the fuel injection project on the midget. (first steps are to install an O2 sensor and new fuel pump/lines/regulator)

Well, I fixed my snowblower yesterday. Does that count?

The Tunebug is resting for the winter. Come spring I'm going to dig back in and try to solve what I think is an exhaust leak.

May do a bit of work on the BMW /5 if it ever stops snowing.

My garage is typically 45 degrees in the month of January. That is a little on the cool side, but tolerable. The hardest part is getting out there and getting started. Once I get started I enjoy tinkering.

I'm hoping to get Mimi painted then install a panhard
rod and tubular front sway bar.
Ol Hap may get to work his magic on the HS4s this winter
and do a little super tuning. Maybe even hook Mimi up to a dyno for fine tuning.
It might be interesting to see what Mimi is getting HP wise to the rear wheels after Hap's magic touches.

My 67 is stored across back of my garage for winter, no major repairs required for her this winter, the new to me 74 that I got back in October is in my mothers shop on jackstands, I'm in the middle of replacing upper trunion bushings, tie rod ends, steering rack boots, lower fulcrum welch plugs (that some DPO drilled out...) Once this work is done, then I will move onto De-Sabrina-ing the bumpers, install dash pad, detail interior, paint rostyle rims etc. etc. have her ready for summer 2011 driving season... starting to consider driving the 74 to Midget 50th instead of 67... 74's tranny isnt as noisy & just feels "better" than my 67, now that have a comparison...
so that's what I'm up to.

Is 70 here today, so I think Miss Agatha should get out and about. I have a santa hat just for times like this. lol

Jack, I'd love to see a picture of that!
You driving along in Ms. A. with your Santa hat on - Priceless!!

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions about how to find a short term (1 - 3 days) heated garage rental?

Frank's transmission is getting very growly and BillM has my 5 speed all rebuilt and ready to go in but it's just to darn cold to do that job outside and Bill's garage is really really full and I simply don't have one.

Fixing some manufacturing flaws in the repop gas tank that was installed many years ago. Fill neck was installed 1.5 inches down into the tank. Recovered some fuel capacity and now can put the gas cap on without pain.
Also redoing the rear flares. Filler installed in '74 giving up. Also I am making them shorter.
Today stripping the rollbar down for new paint. Had to remove most of the interior to get the bar out, so when we get 3-4 days above 50 deg hope to get the interior coated with ceramic insulating paint to help address the cockpit heat in the summer. Bunch of other stuff in the works too. The BugEye has not been off the road this long in 20 years.

Im planning on taking my engine in to get cleaned and bored here very soon. While that getting done my dad and i are prepping my Midget for paint. We plan to finish that next week. Then the engine should be done so we can put it all back together and hopefully hear it run for the first time. Oh also have to install my diamond plate gas take that my grandpa made. The old one was had rust holes all over the place so he made me a new one. Thanks again Gramps!!

After that it should be close to spring so its all interior stuff and fine tuning the engine.

$500.00 Midget
Get gas gauge and water temp gauge operational
Wife's Bugeeye
Get all body repairs from rear to firewall, includes floor patching
New Project, which will probably void out the other two
Purchased a 13' camper (1970) off ebay yesterday for $500.00, all the interior is gone. so rebuild interior of that so I can go camping Easter Week

I have to finish up my $500 Midget and I am at $480. But it runs, drives, and stops.
I have to make an interior for it and bolt on the bonnet.
I would like to get to my Speedwell nose, what ever epoxy went on under the fiberglass reacted and bubbled. And I have to fix that and repaint it.
So why did it take 3 months for the epoxy to lift under the fiberglass?
All the same brand epoxys and glass resins.

Moisture in the mix?

The only real "project" I have while its so cold out is soaking the ONE stripped and frozen Posidriv screw that is preventing me from replacing my top. Heat, soak in Weasel Pee, and heat again. With luck it'll work loose before March.

That, and counting the days 'til Jan 1, when I can FINALLY put my YOM '76 plates on! No more inspections!

Bugsy is on jackstands waiting on me to find another spare hour or so to finish removing the PS wishbones so I can send out to get fulcrum piun bushings replaced. Finally today all present bought, all stockings hung, all decoraitons up, spent 3.5 hours in the car delivering Christmas presents to the In-Laws in Southern OH, SWMBO is decorating Christmas cookies, working from home tomorrow and there are no conference calls scheduled I must attend. Maybe, maybe, maybe I can find time to play with Bugsy in the AM and get the wishbones off for rebushing on Friday morning.

While those are gone, I plan to tackle repair to area behind DS Front wheel and weld in a small patch panel in the footwell and leading edge of the outer rocker. Once Bugsy is back together and on his feet again, will get him turned around in the garage and tackle area behind and under PS Tail lamp.

IF I get real ambitious refurbishing the steering wheel is needed and there is that fiberglass dash still sitting for the past 6-7 years in the back of my garage. And the DIY Carpet kit needs refurbishing in places and the vent wings need polishing and... The list ever goes on but it satifies my tinkering gene that is in the DNA of every LBC owner.

Oh and BTW, Merry Christmas to all...

I'm getting a rear lowering kit for Christmas so I have to install that, and while the wheels are off I'll do the rear brakes... but i'll probably wait until spring as my garage is too cold too... .. unless we have a NODoody ... I'll only drive up if it stops raining though.... This is just stuff i should get done before I go to Wisconsin this summer.

Anybody in the NO$HIT group have a big heated garage?
