Another Spridget rear-axle question:

Since the axle shaft on a WC hardened axle is not welded or bolted to the flange what is supposed to keep it from slipping out of the flange? I am told it is the pin in the middle of the carrier but wonder if this is so. Do Tranx/Salsbury LS units have such a pin?
 
Although I have never used them (I've always just had stock axles), I've seen them.

The outboard end of the axles are splined and are a heavy press-fit into the flanges. It would take many tons of pressure to press them apart.

Other Spridget race axles (such as the Peter May units below) are similar to WC with the press-fit spline on the outer end, but they also have a retaining nut.

I have them...as well. We found out the hard way..(I was chasing a leak after first race and the new axels and the axel seemed to float out of hub at the wheel...was pretty chewed up) I have a welded rear diff..so we made a small piece of axel that is inserted as a spaced in the middle between both winners circle axels...has worked just fine since.
