I have two questions today. #1: Does anyone know how to set the hollow end rivets that I got from Moss to install a new upper wind-wing hinge? Or a better way to fasten it?

#2: Both the hood (top) tongues are broken. I have new tongues but would appreciate ideas as to how to remove the old ones and install the new ones without damaging the top.

Hope I can catch my error before I get jumped on. Must have had a "brain wind-passage" when I refered to the top as the boot.

I had to replace a hinge awhile back. I flared the end of the rivet with something (I think I used a really wide center punch to get it started but I can't remember), then used a piece of hard-wood to back up the rounded part of the rivet and tapped the other end the rest of the way with a very small tack hammer and the blunt end of a center punch. The rivets are softer than they look and it's not difficult to do, mine came out looking like new.
 
I made a tool from a small "C" clamp. I removed the swivel foot from the screw, and then ground the end of the screw to a shallow point. Just pad the fixed end of the clamp, place the point of the screw in the hollow end of the rivet, and tighten. Voila'.

I was just thinking that would have been a better way to go too Jeff. Hopefully I'll never have to do it again but... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
 
Both ways sound do-able but I think I will go your way, Jeff. I just happen to have a small clamp that is never used. Having built two homebuilt aircraft, I have dozens of them!
