last year I had smoke come from dash and wipers turned on. Local shop traced the short to "wiper rest solenoid" and resolved the issue .....but ever since when I switch off the wipers...they just sop wherever they were at the time I shut the switch. Is there really such a solenoid or is it just the switch? Many thanks as always!

the switch to park the wipers is inside the wiper motor.
there should be an ignition fed live going into the wiper terminal block.
could be this wire the short was on and they have disconnected it.
its possible the short was in the motor itself.
Need to have a look at the wiring diagram and check it out.

is the switch inside the motor replaceable or do I need a new wiper motor?

the switch is just a make or break switch operated with a cam,
this keeps the wiper motor live until they reach the park possision on the cam which opens the switch,
I would first check for a live ignition feed to the motor,

this is about the best diagram i can find showing the wiper circuit

if yo look at the diagram, the right hand fuse is power to the wiper. green wire goes straight to the motor plug.
this should be live when ignition is tuned on.
the other green feed many other items including the power to the wiper switch.
if everything else including wipers is working, then the fuse is good.
check there is 12 volts at the wiper end of the green wire,
if you have voltage then there is a problem inside the wiper motor.
you can remove the cover off the wiper motor gearbox, and there will be a big white plastic gear,
the switch and cam is underneath this gear, should be a circlip on the top.
be careful when removing the gear if you refit it the wrong way around the wipers will park the wrong way.
Check for continuity from green wire to the switch and through the switch when the switch is closed.

All Tr6's cry out for a better fuse box.I have seen several fires in the dash from the UNFUSED power wires
that come into the cockpit. I doubt the story told to you by the shop as there is no "wiper rest solenoid"
