Guys, I know we have talked about this in the past, but I can't seem to find the appropriate threads now.

For the BE, how should the windshield rubber be installed? As it is in the pics, or "flapped" under? I am pretty sure it should be flapped under (so it's incorrect now)...

I'm wondering if your wiper spindles are positioned correctly.
 
Jack, if it's correct, then why does the rubber bump up against the wiper mounts?

Trevor, I don't know how the spindles could be different (?). Could you explain what you mean?
 
Thats the way they are, shrug. Mine have always been that way.
 
Mine did the same thing, so I am watching this thread closely to see what the consensus is!

Mustafa, where is the rear-view mirror?
 
The real seal is under the windsheld. That front flap is just a beauty thing.

I thought about trimming, too, but even with my relatively steady hand, I know I wouldn't be able to make two identical smooth and steady cuts...

Mustafa, if you have an X-acto knife and you just want to scallop arount the wiper plinths, you could find a socket the right size or even use the wiper fitting, press it over the rubber in the right spot and trace around it with the knife! Of course, I would remove the windscreen so as not to cut into paint and also to have better work-room!
 
No good close ups in Horler's book but it looks like the seal doesn't cover the wiper plinth at all.
 
Maybe the original seal was narrower?
 
I think I would unscrew the nut and remove the crome cap and see if it lays flat then. Then lay the cap over the rubber and mark the rubber with a pen. Then slide some stiff paper up under the rubber (like a manilla folder) to protect the paint and use an exacto knife to trim it out.
 
Correct as in the photo - ncbugeye still has her ORIGINAL rubber strip, and it is just about falling apart. I have a replacement but haven't got around to installing it yet.

As you suspected, the original part does not "do the wave" over the wiper mountings.

Yes I agree, but it is hard to get it to push in and stay there when it is a new peice of rubber that has been curled around to ship and has been in storage for some time. Really, just push it behind from time to time and it will go in its own good time. your thumb shoud be all the push that is needed.
 
Surprise surprise, a quality contol issue at Moss it looks like.

That's where mine came from that is the same as Mustafa's! No amount of pushing or coaxing helped!!
 
couple things to consider ... my original seal went over the wiper bezels like the picture above only a lot less was covering. the angle of the windshield will change the amount of coverage. you may be able to adjust the windshield thereby pulling the seal back further than it is now. i have always been bothered by this "sloppy" design, but my coverage was not as bad as yours. good luck and keep us posted since most of us have this issue.

IMO i would not cut this seal unless there was a way to add some reenforcement around the cut edge. over time, i believe you would develop stress points at the cut site and cause cracking.
