Windshield Replacement.

[ QUOTE ]
What are the pros and cons of removing the good glass and replacing the cracked glass OR completely swapping out the whole unit?
thanks.

Bob--

The windshield on Mary's BN7 recently cracked several days after I removed the hardtop for the summer. I can only guess that taking the top off allowed some stress to work on the glass and crack it.

In any case I ordered new glass and rubber surround from Healey Surgeons, removed the windshield frame from the stantions and took it to a local glass shop which charged me only $40.00 to R&R the glass and reassemble the works. I then simply reinstalled the glass/frame assembly to the stantions--no problema. To be fair, I had replaced the glass once before only about three years ago so the corner screws/angles were in good shape and did not break in the process.

tmoc,

I suggest that you get a MOSS catalog and one from Victoria British.. Both are on the web and have just about every part that you will need for your BN2...

Randy,

John Loftus provided a link to this thread from a few years ago. I am in the midst to replacing my windshield on my 58 BN-4.

A question or two if I may... The rubber filler strip is new to me... I do not think that Moss offers it or if it was used on the BN4. Also, the channels that you show are different from mine.

In spite of these diferences the photos are a great guide for me.

Since you have done this task I might ask, would it have been easier to cut and fit the strips in each channel (bottom, left, right and top) and assemble the frame around the glass one piece at a time and then do final triming once the frame is assembled??

Thanks in advance for your comments /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif

Randy,

Another note....

Having thought about how you approached the installation, yours is a better way in that it provides a continuous rubber shield around the entire glass. Much better than what I was contemplating...

But, at what point in the frame did you have the ends of the strip meet... middle of the bottom, middle of the top, or??

It also apears that you have trimmed the rubber flush with the frame.. Is that correct??

Ahhh, Never mind...

I am taking it to a shop and pay them to do it... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif

Sorry for the delay, I've been up to my former hairline in BMW work lately...

I kept the glazing continuous with the joint at top-center (least likely to be under water...).

I didn't trim anything until it was assembled, and then used a sharp razor-blade to cut flush with the chrome channel (careful not to scrape the chrome).

Again, my apologies on failing to see your questions sooner.

According to my Healey man, fitting the rubber seal - winscreen to scuttle - should be carried out by inserting one side into the groove across the windscreen and then prizing the other side in using a flatish blunt blade with plenty of lube. He did not say which side if any was the better one to put in first and I have yet to try it, it is on my to do list but low down on priority. If it only took a 1/2 hour that does not seem to bad, how did you go about it.

Randy,

No worries...

As I mentioned to Keoke... I have taken the frame, glass, and rubber to a shop in the area and turned it over to them....In this case, subcontracting it out became a no brainer... $50 and no worries /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

With all of the other projects underway in finishing the BN4 for the October San Diego British Car Days.. spending time re-assembling the windshield would have put me into a severe time crunch... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

Maybe a wimp-out but Thanks for your advice and guidance.... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif
