For those of you who've done this:

When I took the assembly apart, there was quite a bit of caulk of some kind (mostly dried up) inside the side brackets - especially around the L-brackets at each bottom corner. Question: is it necessary to replace all that goo, and if so, with what? Seems like all it would do is trap water in there. (In fact, the L-brackets were quite rusty.)

I use either black silicone or 3M windshield sealant which will remain pliable. You do need to seal the corners to keep water from running down the posts and onto your legs and the floor of the car. Use sparingly.
