Windshield Frame Paint

What's the correct finish for a TR6 windshield frame? Is it flat black enamel, or a semi-gloss enamel, or something else? Right now, it's in Rustoleum rattle can auto primer. Your thoughts are appreciated. Bob rchakr@earthlink.net

If the frame is off and unglassed. Have it powder coated if available in your area. Looks real nice and won't ever need to be done again

Krylon Semi-Flat Black in a rattle can. Do not use Rustoleum
paint, it is a fish oil based paint and does not hold up well in this application.

I painted mine the same "trim black" that is used on the Kamm Tail and on my my sills.

Good idea!

Just a couple small things to watch out for...

Be sure to ask for *exterior grade* powdercoatings, i.e. UV safe. Most automotive coaters will know this, but some industrial coaters might use the non-UV-safe coatings without thinking about it.

Be careful to not have things coated where the thick PCing will cause fit problems. For example, the two large pins on the windshield frame that go into the brackets under the dash should probably not be coated. They are often tight to begin with, would be impossible if any thicker. The coater can mask off anything you don't want coated.

Alan- Good points, that is why I use a co. that specilizes in hot rods and such. They know what to tape off. The office people go over all of my pieces and mark u]where too and where not to coat</u>

I am getting ready to install my windsheild too. I was going to paint it before I put it in, but I just figured it would be too expensive. I thought the windsheild frame was painted the same color as the car. Are you just talking about the inside of the frame being black?

[/ QUOTE ]Originally, only the first-year (1969 model) TR6s had body-color windshield frames. From 1970 on, they were black (more of a satin gloss, I think), as were the same frames as used on Spitfire and GT6.

Darn - would have been a lot easier to paint my 69 frame black. I can't believe all of the subtle changes from this year and later years.

Actually, Kev, rumour has it some 69s did have black frames. I wouldn't sweat it. Just as some early TR6's had body-coloured rear kamm-back.
