Well, the car is coming apart nicely. I am working back to front and am at the doors and dash area. Here are my next two questions.

BTW it's my '76 (1500)

1. How is the "door cap" held on. The piece of vinyl trim over the door panel and next to window.

2. I've got all the bolts off the windshield frame and now I need to know how to get the shims out (and back in I suppose) to slide the window out. I don't really want to dismantle the window frame if I can help it.

The door caps are held on by two or more bolts and nuts. The bolt heads are rectangular plates which slide along a groove on the inside of the caps. The nuts can be reached by removing the vinyl door panel and reaching up inside the door through the openings on the inside frame of the door.

They are quite awkward to reach, but because the bolt heads are rectangular you don't have to worry about them turning when you loosen the nuts. I got a special ratchet wrench the correct size which fit into the narrow space where the nuts are, but you can also do it with a box wrench.

Patience is the name of the game with this task.

To take the windshield off, you need to have the two bolts out of each pillar, and the two screws out of the center support rod. The shims are no problem(they'll fall out when you pull the frame out), just mark them so that that you can put them back on the correct side.
 
To replace the shims, tape them to the windshield post leg before replacing it.
To remove the door caps, use a 5/16 wrench and a twist of the wrist to get up in there. No fun but not imposible.
