TR2/3/3A windscreen fitment - tr-3a

Ready for final installation of the windscreen - I have great fitment without the bottom seal installed - with the seal in place, I create lots of get lateral loading to attach the staunch - the only way I can see to remove the latter load is by trimming the seal, which reduces its effectiveness - Am I being to picky? Is a certain amount of lateral loading to be expected - Mid-Night
 
I am confused, Miles. How is the seal interfering with the fit of the stanchions? It shouldn't run between the stanchions & frame at all, instead it actually gets anchored to the curved backside of the stanchions with little plates & screws.
 
Randall - were the seal terminates at the base of the stanchion - it is attached with the plates you referenced - the seal extends a small amount toward the front of the car and is between the stanchion and the body - this small amount causes the stanchion to roll away from its attachment point - I must force it to meet-up for attachment - I have contemplated trimming the seal - however this reduces its effectiveness.
 
Randell - In thinking about it, I could file the back side of the stanchion to give a little more clearance - I appreciate your comments - miles
 
I going to be doing this soon so I can't help. I would not modify the stanchion. The seal is cheap compaired to buying a used stanchion and having the chrome redone.
 
It takes a little trimming on the sides to get the seal to fit. Mine was about 2inches too long.

Kevin - thank you for the photo - I have looked for a tr-3 for 3 years here in northern Nevada, to no avail - the picture is perfect - that is exactly how mine looks - on the back side of the stanchion its relived where the seal rest - the seal butts up to a shoulder at the end of the recess - I may need to file the recess to gain a little more room, or accept the lateral load that needs to be applied to secure the stanchion - thanks
 
That's interesting, Don. Is that photo of your early TR3A or the post-60K one?

Miles, if you can force it into place by hand, then I wouldn't worry. Mine takes a fair amount of force to latch the Dzus buttons even without the seal installed. I've only covered a few thousand miles with the TR3, but my early TR3A was much the same and in perhaps 200,000 miles the windshield never broke; even in the accident that totaled the car.
