On a slightly different tack ... I just went to Sears Hardware. Found exactly what I needed. Went to pay - $2.35 for a small spring.

Cashier scans the code, then she asks me to enter my phone number in the small touch screen.
Entered number, and got "ask cashier to enter *complete*".
Did that.
Cashier then says "are you a member of the Craftsman Club?"
I say no. She says "please press no on the screen".
Screen then says "Please enter your email address so you can receive special notices of sales and other promotions."
I declined.
Cashier takes my cash and says "please choose the appropriate icon on the screen".
Screen says "Do you wish an E-Receipt, or an E-Receipt and a paper receipt?".
I said to the cashier "no receipt needed". (How can you get an e-receipt without them knowing your email address ...?)
She looks at screen and says there's no choice for no receipt. Calls supervisor.
Supervisor finally comes over, looks at screen, says "You can't get an e-receipt without entering an email address."
Fortunately I had already paid the cashier and needed no change. Smiled and walked out.
What would we ever do without software "refinements"?

And every one of those touch-screen checkout terminals seems to be different from one business to the next. Why do we need to play Twenty Questions to purchase a can o' beans?!?! Lunacy.
