Windows Media Player Help

I've got this new PC and I am computer savvy enough not to get myself in trouble but this one is eluding me. Several times when I am given online videos to look at or one of you guys post a link for one, I can't view it. This is what happens:

I click the link and I get a pop up.

PLUGIN WARNING!
The...video experience is optimized for WMP 9 or above.
No Windows Media Player detected.

Get The Player

I click get the player and it opens a new window that allows me to download WMP 11 (which I know I have) I decide to go through the motions again download it. I go back to the link for the video and the exact same thing happens. Am I missing something? I know I have WMP 11 as I use it all the time for my music.

This is just a guess, but is it possible that the "file type" setting in your computer is not associating the file extension of the file in question with teh Windows Media Player? If you can determine the file extension of the file on the web site, then go to Control Panel >> Folder Options then click the "File Types" Tab. Now scroll to the file type in question and see if it is associated with the correct WMP.

Not sure if this will help, but its something you could look at easily enough.

I just downloaded WM 11. When the window is up, press the 'ALT' key to bring up the menu bar, select 'tools' then 'options' and it has several tabs.
As Basil mentioned, ensuring the media player is the default for video would be one thing, but there are also several 'plug-in' options from the menu bar also that maybe needed.
