Hi Tom,
I've tried Clonezilla and had an issue with it. To copy back and forth, I needed 2 hard drives of the same capacity. I could clone to a larger drive, but I couldn't get that info back onto my smaller, original drive.
 
If it comes loaded on a new machine, you'll have little choice but to use it. But to "upgrade" a Win7 or XP box to a "new" O/S is, IMO, a waste of time and money.

I have little choice, as I'm expected to know the stuff. But my clients get the lecture about pigs and lipstick regarding the loading of a newer O/S on top of an older version.

When my wife's computer died two years ago (death throes, obviously short time in this world) we ordered a new Dell. "Businessman's Special", XP loaded, 7 discs so you could upgrade later.
Got it, 7 loaded, no discs.

Had a neighbor who works in the industry find me some new XP discs (free, with license), eradicated 7, loaded XP.

She's happy.

And the old box literally quit 15 minutes after we'd copied out the last of her files.

Hi Paul,
From what I can tell, what you download is only an install program in ISO format. This is not a ready-to-go download. As far as installing the OS onto a USB drive, it sounds like it is possible, but a pain to do. I found a reference to the procedure on that link I provided earlier. There is a forum link on the bottom of that page. Try searching there. I don't think I'll use Win8 any time soon. There is a lack of touch screen monitors in stores. I'd like to test drive the touch feature before I buy one.

Well Greg, I don't plan on using I-8 either. I don't have a touch screen and personally don't care for the idea on a conventional computer. Don't like finger prints all over the screen. Great for iphones and such. I'm just a curiosity nut and like to play with new ideas. Won't touch anything that might screw up the computer though, been down that road before. I like W-7 and will probably stick with it for good. It does everything I want, plus we have it on two other machines.

I've been thinking of getting a touch screen. I recently built a computer that I use as an effects processor for my guitar. Using a mouse while holding the guitar is awkward so I thought it would be cool to adjust the control knobs directly on the screen. This machine is dual boot with XP and Fedora 17 so I need to find a monitor that has drivers for both operating systems. :crazy:

I have a little bit. Doing a search doesn't turn up a whole lot on Fedora Forum. I'll post a question when the hole in by pocket starts burning. :wink:
 
Ain't that th' truth. I swear the computer "industry" is all there is to keep this economy's heart thumpin' at all.
 
My computer problems are often the result of operator error.
