Windows 7

I have heard tha AVG, Kaspersky and Norton- are the ones MS suggests. I read on some forum some where that Avast and Threatfire appear to work as well.

here is a quick review

and another

it appears the there are only a few at the moment.

i use a HW firewall, and my isp is very good at keeping things out.

I have Norton's System Works in my two other machines, one lap top and one desk top. Works great, but my isp has a deal with Trend Micro and we get the full version and latest up dates for free. It's compatible with Norton's in most cases, so both can be run at the same time. I didn't want to load up everything while trying W-7.

Even though I'm not an Internet Explorer fan, I use Flock, based on Firefox, the new IE 8, which comes with W-7 looks nice and has some nice new features. Even though it's still in Beta, I'm going to load it in my desk top and try it out. Works great in this machine.

I've been watching the video linked in Mark's post. The installer refers to something called "Disk Part", which I assume is the app needed to make a bootable partition on the USB stick. Unfortunately the source server, "solsie.com" is refusing connections - maybe overly popular?

Has anyone heard of that DiskPart app? maybe another source or a similar app?

Installer in the video indicates Win7 installation from a USB stick is a *lot* faster than making and using a DVD for the same purpose.

Did some searching and found several suggestions on making a USB stick bootable.

Bootable USB suggestions

All my life (60 years!) I've believed that USB devices were *not* bootable - but FireWire were bootable. The old dog needs to learn new tricks.

woof - woof!

I could see it being faster, the only thing is, how do you set up your machine to boot from a USB port? That's one thing I haven't figured out yet.

Hi Paul - ideas for booting from a USB device are in my previous post.

You got it! That's great! I book marked the pages. Thanks Tom. I agree with, "old dogs learning new tricks"! That's what gets me so upset with this younger generation,(not really), Their So Darn Smart!

I put this in another post, but I thought I'd put it here. I removed the Windows 7 from the machine as there are issues with the wireless hook up. W-7 doesn't recognize the wireless software in Vista and doesn't seem to have wireless software embedded in it's self. If it wasn't for that issue, I'd have kept it in the machine until time ran out. It has some real nice features, but, I need my wireless.

Thanks for the update. If wireless support is shakey, it's probably another thing MS is still working on. Hope you were able to give them some detailed feedback.

Tom

Tom,
if you dont mind what is the machine you are/were using? specifically the wireless card type and specs?

HI Mark - are you referring to Paul's wireless problem? I'm thinking his Win7 had a wireless driver support problem - not "wireless software".

Tom

oops sorry about that Tom..I did mean Paul.
I am just curious because i had no problem with the wireless set up on mine. Win 7 didn't even hiccup on that point.

It's a new Compaq CQ 60 lap top Mark. It has a wireless button on top that turns blue when the wireless is activated. It stays off all the time with W-7 and when I push it to turn it on, it shuts off the entire Internet hard wire connection. I have to reboot to get the hard wire connection back. No amount tweaking resolves it. Like someone said, it is Beta and I'm sure MS is working on those problems. I did write MS and inform them of the problem. We'll see if they respond.
