Windows 11

Country flag
Offline
So, my old laptop I used to connect to the V and play TV shows and movies failed about a month ago. Went and got a new one since the failure was the board. Got a Windows 11 and so far, not impressed. First, if you get one make sure you get the version that allows you to install other stuff that you didn't buy through the Microsoft store. The one they pushed first here required all software additions be purchased exclusively there. They sold another version that allowed outside software, but cost a $100 more. Once using it, found the mouse pointer jumps across the screen, had to do some digging found that there is a flag in the mouse setting to make it do that, supposed to be easier than scrolling across the screen. Problem is, it jumps right across to the other border so then you have to go back, which might jump to the other side. Turned the flag off.

Still have annoying issues. The mouse will freeze in a spot for anywhere from a couple seconds to a minute or so. Then jump around instead of just moving. Other times, works ok. When I play a video, sometimes it just stops the picture version and the sound keeps going. Sometimes both will stop for a minute or two then continue. It turns off the external drive where the TV/movies are as it is playing then has to stop to restart. When booting most of the time starts in less than a minute, but sometimes never starts. Doesn't give an error, just doesn't give the little startup revolving symbol. Let it go once, 10 minutes later still hadn't moved from the initial screen when it was turned on. Required a hard shutdown and try again, then it worked.

So as a review, I'm not impressed with it, and I've had for work and personal use Windows machines since Win 3.2. Maybe the laptop is underpowered or needs more memory. Maybe other hardware improvements or capacity. I just don't know, but wanted to share what I've seem over the last few weeks so if you're considering it you have my experiences to factor in.

Mike- I'm thinking the problems are the laptop, not Win11.

Where'd you buy the laptop? I've seen some brick and mortar places "re-configure" laptops so they require things Windows never required itself.

I don't like Windows 11, so I took my Lenovo LT to a shop and had the technician remove it and install Windows 10. It works great; I love it!

Could be, I got it through Best Buy. The business with the mouse pointer, found online that the movement flag is the Microsoft default setting and there were quite a few who were annoyed with it. And my work laptop was upgraded to Win11, it sometimes goes to sleep and refuses to wake up. Requires a hard shut down and restart. And some of the issues I see on the new one, I see on the upgraded one. Doesn't stop it's use for either, but it is something that bugs me.

What might be the problem is "value added software". HP and Acer among others I imagine, have loaded bloatware on top of the OS. My Acer laptop was strapped for memory with all the extra crap that was trying to make my life "better". I went to Microsoft's website and downloaded a vanilla copy of Win10 for free. Wiped the old OS, reformatted, then installed vanilla copy. Problems went away. You can use task manager to see what is running. I have in the past, turned off a lot of processes I didn't want running in the background. Memory hogs running just for software updates.

I run Win 10 and it has been alright, not as good as Win 7, but it works well enough. My work laptop is a Lenovo with Win 11 on it, and I wish I could wipe the OS and install Win 10.

My main complaint about Win 10 was that they were trying to make a smart phone interface for a computer. Now, that I have seen Win 11 it looks like they have succeeded.

Windows 7 was the last version I used before moving completely to Apple.
Windows 7 is the last one I bought for myself. On my desktop I have dual boot with Windows and Linux. I let Windows update to 10 this past year so it would work with a couple of work related applications. I have a laptop from work, but it has Windows 11 and I abhor that abomination.

Just a reminder that Oct.14th is the end of support for Win10. Security updates and tech support will stop unless you buy an additional year of support for $30.

Thanks Greg. Have you run into any cases of Windows 11 systems no longer able to update, with the message "you're hardware does not support Windows 11"?

But you're already running Windows 11?

My daily driver is Linux Mint. I have a laptop running Win10 that I use for work and a desktop with 10 for photography. The desktop hasn't been used for over a year I'd guess. The CMOS battery went bad on that one. Replaced it but now I need to switch the video cable to the onboard video card to get into the BIOS and reset my dual screen monitor. Or not.
