So Carla and I have been saying "NO" to installing Windows 10 for several months now. This last Thursday, while I was away from the computer, Microsoft hijacked it and began installing Windows 10 !!! I noticed and couldn't figure out how to stop it. We've been happy with Windows 7 Home Premium for a long time. I know it isn't supported anymore but we HATE this Windows 10. How are you guys handling this ??
 
I have updated to "10" yet and have no intentions of doing so unless it becomes a no choice situation. The reason I haven't is that the Windows Media Center will no longer exist and I use this to play my music and watch TV while I'm on the computer. They had better not hijack my 'puter. I wished I could help you but we have other folk who probably will be able to. Good luck.
 
My wife Carla actually got a notice on her laptop a couple of days ago that it was scheduled for auto download this week !!!
 
The inevitable will happen, sooner or later. You can prevent this, by shooting MS in the foot and going with Linux. :highly_amused:, of course the learning experience will have to start all over again. Most of the general public over the years has been educated in the computer market by MS. They have made many good improvements to their systems, even though we disagree with them at times, I agree that Windows 7 was the best of the latest upgrades. 10 will improve, but how long will it take is the question. Look at all the Britts that come over here and learn to drive on the "proper" side of the road! :encouragement:, see, anything is possible. :jester:. 10 is just another part of the learning curve if you want to stay with windows, I use both systems and even though some will disagree, one has it's benefits over the other. Switch to Ubuntu Mint and it's not hard to learn.
 
If you've set your computer to "automatically download updates", then MS may download the whole Windows 10 kit and kaboodle to your computer. but it still asks if you want to install it. At that point you can say No, and prevent further action.

If you ignore the prompt, it'll probably go ahead and install.

But all the folks I know who use Win10 (including me!), say it's very much like Win7. One of our museum computers uses a 15 year old Canon printer, and there's no Win10 driver for it (that's Canon's choice). Other than that, all our machines are happily running Win10.

I switched from Windows PCs to iMac a few years ago :encouragement: Absolute best thing I ever could have done and have zero regrets! (and I was a life-long PC user).
 
My home lap-top has Windows 10 and Linux Fedora installed on it. I prefer Fedora but for somethings I switch over to Windows 10. I don't have much of a problem with 10 it is similar in layout and function to 7. What I hate is my work computer has 8 on it (which absolutely stinks) and for some reason we are not upgrading to 10 yet.
 
Apple is not an option for me as I sometimes do CAD work on my home PC and a Windows environment is required.

My wife updated her Windows 8 laptop to 10 while I continue to use 7. Right after she updated, one of her new video editing programs stopped working. The publisher worked with her for weeks to resolve the problem and finally had to give up. I don't want to experience the same with my software so I will watch for and decline the installation option should the update by automatically downloaded.

I run Windows on my iMac - can run it alone or at same time as the MAC OS (Using a program called Parallels). Works great for those (in my case rare) times when I need Windows.
 
I'm using an older version of AutoCAD that requires XP. With 7 Pro, I can have a virtual XP OS. I don't want to spend the $$$ for new AutoCAD, so I'm staying with 7Pro. Besides, my major client, with a huge IT staff is still with 7Pro, with no plans to change.
 
Don't know about AutoCAD working in W-10, but a lot of W-7 folks don't like how the menu works compared to W-7. This can be overcome by downloading and installing Classic Shell. It is customizable to suit ones needs and look. Gives you the initial menu back with the button in the lower left of the screen, you can even change the colors and display. Doesn't interfere with any other programing, but to me, gives me better control of where I initially want to go.
A big complaint also is it won't allow Windows Live Mail to work properly, not so! My live mail works perfectly in 10, you just have to set it up right. PJ

MS tricked me into updating from 7 Pro to 10. There were 3 or 4 programs it said were not compatible but they were not critical so I have stayed with it. The start menu is still a little confusing as is Windows Explorer, or File Explorer as they call it now, at least for external devices. I had Live Mail on 7 and it transferred fine. Well, at least as "fine" as it was before. It seems the problem with Live Mail is getting it from MS. I have not been able to get it for the wife's laptop and I cannot seem to make Outlook work with our mail server. I purposely updated it because it came with the hated Windows 8. Oh well, I guess MicroSlime knows better than I do what I really need.
 
I have Windows 7 installed on my iMac (in the Bootcamp partition). I disconnected from the internet and ran though a procedure involving editing the registry that now prevents my Windows from being updated. I don't use Windows that mush but when I do, Win 7 does just fine.
 
I have noticed lately that the "free update to 10" notice has become a bit more "pushy". It now comes up with a statement that Microsoft has scheduled my update for April XX and then gives me a selection of do not update, or OK. I have intentionally selected "do not update" and will continue to do so.

I was never able to get my old AutoCad (R14) to run under the "created XP environments" in Vista or Seven so I am not going to bother installing Ten. (Footnote: You can make dinosaur versions of AutoCad work under newer Windows by copying the entire Acad folder from a machine where it runs and placing that on your later Windows machine. "Help" won't work and a few commands have problems but the program generally runs). I am not going to play around with an OS change only to find that my other CAD program (SolidWorks) won't run under Ten. And neither of those programs was intended to run under/on Apple products. With my past experience with running old programs on new OS, I am not going to consider a switch to Apple at all.
