Windows 10 - I was assimilated

In spite of the number of times I refused the installation, this morning Windows 10 just installed itself. Not a biggie because I just bought a new computer which comes with it anyway. But it's the principle of the thing:

So far, following the instructions in the fix-link that Basil posted has prevented the auto-assimilation. I get the nearly daily reminders that there is a copy of 10 waiting for me but Windows has not installed itself. I will continue to resist.
 


For what it's worth, I did the switch to 10 (from 7) two months ago....no big deal, no problems.

Same here, but about eight months ago. Works fine.

Side note: imagine if our cars were constantly updating. "We're sorry, but your Start button driver is no longer compatible with recently upgraded system software. Please go to Device Manager, uninstall the Start button, then push Start."

I know Win10 works for some people. My wife had a laptop with Win8 so she was looking for something better. She is generally happy with 10. However, a month before her upgrade I bought her some video editing software she wanted. Even though the software was supposed to be compatible with 10, it would not run after her "upgrade". She spent countless hours on the phone and exchanging emails with tech support with the software company. They eventually gave up.

I do not wish to repeat her experience.
 
This past week I have had to reverse FOUR 'spontaneous installations' of Win10, a couple of them went blue screen and reported : "no operating system found". One wouldn't address a specialty printer but was otherwise running fine. Another went to a "91% done with the installation" and sat for eight hours, the client then TURNED IT OFF!!! GAH!

Still have three laptops on the bench at the hovel to deal with. This is a waste of time and money for these businesses! Micro$hite has gone too far with this one, IMHO. That "notice" Jay posted about sums it up.
 
At least it keeps us IT folks in business, Doc. It's a jobs program. :grin:
 
Yeah, Drew, I don't charge any less for my time to 'correct' the up-screw'd installs but I could better spend that time doing something useful. Like improving clients' security schemes or contemplating the curvature of space-time around black holes. Or... Or... :smirk:

Luckily for us, on this issue at least, we're mostly Mac for desktops (with a mix of Windows and Linux servers). Only a few Windows clients, and we haven't had any of them "volunteer" for the update yet.
 
Strangely, I haven't heard a peep from Win10 update on my Win7 machine. It does do updates, and some this month even.
 
happened over here too:
win 10 took it upon it's self downloaded & install last night.....I'm ticked.
I have clicked "no" or "later" or "cancel" about 1000 times, so microsoft decided to do it himself.
I was under the false impression that this machine belonged to me.


now my iphone is popping up software upgrade windows about every 5 minutes.......what ever happened to the concept: "if it ain't broke don't fix it"?
 
I had the involuntary Windows 10 download and install happen last week. Of course, it happened at a time when I desperately needed to log on to my emails as I was in the middle of a substantial transaction.

I tried in vane to work with Windows 10. Suddenly, when I clicked on the help lady icon, I found an option that said I had 30 days to restore back to 8.1. It took about 20 minutes, but the restore worked, and I am back to 8.1 and doing well! AND, as an added bonus, I have yet to see the Windows 10 notice!
 
I watched the series "American Genius" last night and the episode I watched happened to be about Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. Gates was not a very ethical guy IMHO! Glad I switched from PCs to the iMAC a few years ago. I don't miss Windows one little teeny tiny bit!
