Windcreen wiper woes

Aghhhhhhhh

Pulled the wiper motor and tested it on the bench - seems to only pull 1 amp ( if I am checking it correctly ) - but worked

and does not self park - woe number 1

decided to check the brushes

Worn down into the metal holders - woe number 2.

Can you get new metal holders? just checked a few suppliers sites over here and they are not listed.

I am desperately trying to remember that I was just rebuilding the engine at this time, not the whole car

A BJ7, so they should self-park.

On my Healey, power is supplied to terminal "2", terminal "E" goes to ground (earth), and terminal "1" goes through the switch to ground. When the switch at "1" is opened, power should go through "2" to the motor and "E" to ground to self park.

Can the park position of the wiper motor be adjusted with the unit still installed on a BJ8?

I think the only way to adjust without removing the motor is to move the blades from one spline to another. Supposedly, that gives about 5 deg of adjustment.
 
Hey Bob, put it back in the car and remind yourself that you only wanted to rebuild the engine. Or pretty soon you'll be into that 4th year on a 2 year rebuild like me. Who uses wipers anyway? :smile:

Thanks...That sounds a lot easier than taking the unit back out of the car!

It has to be on the road by the end of August or the catering management will have my dangly bits in a vice!

Working on the wiper problem as we write - could be cannibalising one up the road - watch this space!

Result

Picked up a second hand wiper unit and looking in, it appears to be brilliant, will bench test it this afternoon.

Well the second motor was in a bit of a state and looks possibly to be out of a BJ8, bigger wheel and longer armature spindle - due to the wheel, gave it a quick clean up but it has not worked - yet, will recheck following the tightening up of the field coil bolts :wall: DOH.
So I took the bits out required for the BJ7 motor and we are up and running, it will not self park though, I can not understand that, as electrical testing appears to back up the theory. All the contacts are clean, the wiring looks to be fine, but still the motor stops dead when you kill the switch, that extra earth link does not want to kick in to self park.?

A naive suggestion: Is it possible that the dome (which controls the self-parking position) is in a position that prevents parking? You might try rotating it a little and see what happens.

State Inspection facilities do.
 
Taking your point Keith_M, rotating the dome alters the point at which the wipers self park, the aim is to get a position where the wiper rack parks at its max position either to the left or right depending on which side you want the wipers to park.

Having examined inside the dome again, I have used a fine wet or dry paper and cleaned up both the contacts and lo and behold it works. I had a continuity reading before, but I guess that it was not strong enough. Now we are cooking on gas.

More like parking with electricity, but glad you figured it out!
