Wind Deflector

I'm as much a 'Healey Experience' purist as anybody, but sometimes, over the course of 6+ hours of driving the constant wind blast on the back of my head gets, well, uncomfortable. Has anyone fitted a wind deflector, similar to what you sometimes see on Boxsters, to a Big Healey? I'm thinking you could extend a tonneau support rail a foot or so and fill it with some mesh.

A friend has one of the old Alfa Romeo droptops, and he said his wife wouldn't ride in it until he bought such a deflector, so they must help some.

Hi All,

A few years back I created a Wind Deflector and used the tonneau frame mounts in my BJ8 to hold its frame. Similar to the tonneau supporting bar, the unit went down to the top of the seat and up to cover your head. Although it seemed to work reasonably, used a piece of clear plastic cover the opening. Since the unit was one piece, it was not storable in the car when not in use. Since I seldom use the Healey on long trips any more, I lost interest in the project and eventually discarded the unit. Had I continued, I would have designed the unit into 2 interlocking pieces and for easy storage and had 2 separate but connected deflectors (one for each of the front seats) with or nothing in the frame between the 2. A soft tonneau could be created to cover the top and back seats which attached to the deflector and attached at the bottom to the original tonneau lower mounts.

Well, that was my thoughts. However, in the end the need was no where near the level of increasing complexity and interest.

Just my thoughts,

Here are some images of a home made one I captured at one of our Oregon meets. Quite clever, as it bifolds, and the clip that holds it straight when in use also serves as a third brake light:
Anyone know how to rotate the pics so you don't go cross eyed looking at them?....sorry

Hi Jerry,

That is a nice implementation. How is the unit anchored? I see the top part of the vertical but not how it attached to a supporting Healey structure. Is the tonneau cover in the picture the standard one for BJ8s or a modification?

Nice,

I talked to the guy briefly, but I believe it has two posts which tie into the hoop that goes from side to side supporting the tonneau cover. The cover looked standard to me, he just cut holes to fit in the shield and added those flaps in front, but I cannot recall what they were for, Sorry. That is foam tubing slit on one side slipped over the frame edges. Its cut out of aluminum plate, 1/8 thick IIRC, and sandwiches the mesh which he had gotten locally, home depot or some place like that. The hinges look a little off, but otherwise nice fit and finish. jerry
