I think you will have trouble with the tunnel on the 66 being a bit narrow for the later transmission. I have heard that they will fit, but a bit of bashing may be called for. Although I have no personal experience with this, it would be nice to have a full synchro crash box in there.
Hopefully someone more knowledgable will chime in.
If you either beat the heck out of your trans tunnel or replace it entirely it'll fit in the body...
...then you have to change out the engine back plate to move the starter to the later location (& use a later starter with solenoid on top of it & make the associated wiring changes) & change out the pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft...
...oh, I believe the shifter location is also totally different!
Huh! - A crash box has no syncros at all. Had one of those in a 36 MGPB some years ago. It was just as easy to shift without the clutch as with it. It wasn't long before I would only use the lutch to get the car moving initially.
Cheers,
It will fit with some work. I have a '72 OD gearbox in my '67 BGT. The tunnel has to be widened a small amount and as mentioned above you may have to fiddle with the starter, etc.
Yikes! So how does all of this effect swapping lumps?
I have a '68 BGT with a '74 motor in it now. I have a '72 rebuilt motor to put in. I have the back plate for the '72. I'll use the tranny (with OD) that is in the car now.
Is there a fit problem hooking different motors to the tranny? or lining up motor mounts? or something else?
Also, I remember seeing something in here about "big valve '74 heads". Is there a difference? If so, is there some kind of marking on the head to know that it really is a '74? Can heads be swapped between '72 & '74 without going through a lot of heck?
I put an all-synchromesh transmission (and its attached engine) in a 67 MGB back in the mid 70s. I did not have to bash on the tunnel, though the stick does come up about 2"-3" further rearward (I notched the separate tunnel cover to accomodate it).
Eventually, that car wound up with a 3-synchro overdrive transmission attached to its original engine.
Not to change the subject but here is another scenario. I have a 67 GT with a 68 tranny. Tunnel bashed a little for it to fit. (this was done by PPO). If I wanted to for some strange reason switch back to the 67 trans (it came with the car), would it be a straight swap other than having to find a starter? Is one trans stronger or weaker than the other?
Just a scenario. I have a 73 GT OD that I'd like to have rebuilt for it.
The later gearbox is stronger but heavier. The reason I prefer earlier gearboxes is for the mechanical feel versus the more modern, smoother feel of the later ones which I don't care for.
