MG glass gods hate me.

Get home friday windshield is fine
Saturday windshield is fine
Sunday morning windshield is cracked from the bottom passenger side heading up to the top right with no nicks or rock dimples anywhere to be seen and it wasn't on the road on saturday.

Now for the pleasure of trying to find a shop yet again who will do it. The last one doesn't ever want to see me again and the glass is less than 2 years old and what kills me is I have a nice freshly polished up frame sitting in my living room in grand forks that would of been perfect for this car since I now have to through the pain of changing out a windshield.

Arg.


Changing out the clutch this week to

this is why I have a complete extra windshield in good condition stashed in the garage
 
Did they use the original screws that were in the frame before it was disassembled - or did they use some new ones from off their shelf? Those little screws are unique to the MGB windshield frame!
 
They used the original screws and the crack is a good six inches away from the closest one so as much as I'd like to blame them I cant. The only plus side I can see to this is I can go back to a clear windshield and I'm going to try one of the new Triplex ones. I just need to figure out why they are offering a modified corner and un modified version.

New seals for the replacement windshield have been in the garage for 2 weeks cause it was too cold to even try and mount them....today its in the 70's and we were ready to mount the windshield...I was trying to flip the seal out in one place, pushed too hard in the wrong spot and cracked the passenger side!!! :wall: :wall:
I HATE DAYS LIKE THESE!!!!

Guess I need to get lots of windshelds in stock...my last one is sitting waiting for the guy who bought it to return from France!!
 
Sorry to hear the bad news, I know how you feel. :frown:

I have two GT windshields and a hatch window sitting in my shed. Also waiting for the weather to warm up. :wink:
 
I'd rather do half a dozen GT windscreen replacements than ONE roadster one!

...and toss in the rear glass for FUN. :jester:
 
Couple of years ago I had a friend that couldn't keep a windshield for more than a few months before he'd get a crack. Usually in the lower rt area.

Then he caught his spouse using the windshield as a grab handle.

Keep an eye on your passengers.

It is possible to have good local-install luck with these. When I bought the TR4, it needed a new windshield. Just for kicks, I called a local glass place. They not only had one in stock (?) but were quite professional about the installation, even asking me about the missing trim for the window seal. Maybe I just got lucky...
 
Yeah, Drew. Lucky it weren't an MGB! They're "different".
 
Sorry for the stress there Stewart. Maybe you will develop an abscess and have to have a root canal next week. That should brighten things up from doing the B windscreen!

An idle thought is that this is just another one of those wonderment things as to how cars get put together at the factory in the first place. I mean, how in the heck could they have done a half million of these without having their windshield assembly guys grab sniper rifles and look for tall towers? On top of that at the rate that WE get these things done and have them break the factory would have lost money on every car just because they had to buy six bits of glass in order to get one car out the door.

It all falls under that same question as the one about how in the heck can manufacturers put an entire car together, let along a zillion of them, and NEVER have a screw slot go out the door messed up or a fastener lack the correct number and type of washers. I read someplace that Horace Dodge, of Dodge brothers fame was a complete and total production engineer genius, both when the two worked for Ford and when they did their own gig. I for one think that ALL of those types are geniuses.

Tho I will say I've taken in MANY Alfa Romeos off the trucks in my day, and almost ALL of them had a number and variety of parts in their trunks which were somehow NOT put in their proper place during assembly... and I do mean ALL sorts. It was a real challenge to deliver one of those cars. "PDI" was a mix of "What th' heck is THAT?" and "Did you check the suspension bolts?"

The last week I sold 'em, I sold three cars, PDI'd 'em and delivered 'em. Kinda like a triathlon run! :smirk:

Went up to moss and picked up a brand new windshield and seals and the glass has a chip on the bottom edge.

Didn't get home till after 5 so its going to be at least Thursday before I can try again as I'm doing the clutch Wednesday.

Glass did look nice though and I still haven't figured out why there is a notched and un notched version of the windshield and the guy working the counter at moss didn't have a clue.

I've tried the local route and while there was a shop that did mine a year and a half ago another guy on the boards went there and after that they don't want to see another one. I'm going to go ahead and give it a shot my self.
 
If you look at the VB windshields, they also have notched corners....think its to keep the glass away from the little screws but not sure.
 
Take your time and follow the Bentley book, Stew.

Load the center rod as you go. When it gets the front gasket to a sealing point, pressure the side pillars to a visually similar place with regard to the edges of the seal.

Call it: "Kentucky Windage"...
 
Fun has already begun. Drivers side lower L bracket was so far gone that it broke and the screws that hold it are rusted solidly in place weeeeeeeeee
