Some of you may have heard of the big flood in Minot, and north central ND (or maybe not, may not be newsworthy outside the local area). I would like to point out a few things that make me pretty proud to be living here.

Over 14000 people in Minot are displaced by the flood, yet less than 300 were in local public shelters. The rest have been taken in by family, friends, relatives or strangers. The above does not include the many other smaller towns, villages or homes all along the length of the Souris River who were also flooded who are coping just as well.

About 1/4 of the city has been destroyed or severely damaged, yet there has been no civil disobediance, and no reported theft or looting.

Over 4000 homes in Minot alone are still under water, not including the rest of the river valley and towns such as Burlington, Sawyer, Westhope, Bantry, Sherwood..... Today, during a press conference a US Govt Official (I can't remember his name, but he was with FEMA I think), said that he was amazed there hasn't been a single serious injury or fatality. I'm not really that surprised.

Thanks to the Emergency Services,( Law Enforcement, Fire, Public Works, Rescue, Infrastructure, Medical) the different city govenments, National Guard, Minot Air Force Base, Engineers, FEMA, Medical, and anyone I may have forgotten. And, last, but not least, The citzens of North Dakota.

That's because most of the people in that state are related to each other .
And I know this first hand

Tru Dat the state is a friendly and helpful one.

Bryan,

Isn't that the way it should be?I saw that in Tennessee & Georgia
after the tornados. The communities come together after a natural emergency.
This shouldn't come as a suprise - but it does.

Isn't it a shame that it takes a disaster to get a lot of people in the charitable mood and bring them together. I know it will never happen but, could you imagine if people would act this way every day, the peace and serenity that would evolve. The benefits would be staggering! PJ

Re: Why would anyone want to live in North Dakota?

I was there in 1969 thru 1979 I have been thru my share of flooding in minot it is the worst, when the mouse roars it's bad deal. Back in the day the bypass did not exist it took you better part of a day to go from the north hill to south hill. When it floods it cut the town in half.In 1975 I drove dump trucks for a construction company to dump dirt on dikes around the arrowhead shopping center at nite. and went the school during the day. scariest job I ever did backing down a dike watching your mirrors for orange coned flash lites knowing if you screwed up your going in the street on your side or in to the raging Mouse river.I still have lots of freinds there and I'm so sorry they are going thur this again. some of the best people in the world live up there check out there face book page minot flood and you will see why the shelters are empty.

Re: Why would anyone want to live in North Dakota?

all that water is coming back to Manitoba Canada,
Crests are expected to be another 8 feet higher
Farmers in Manitoba are now fish farms with farmers checking their fields by boat.

The lakes manitoba and winnipeg are away above normal and today there is a wind warning expecting the south basins to get pretty bad.
